\u201cIt means a lot to us that we do this,\u201d Page told KERA. \u201cIt just kind of snowballed and grew.\u201d<\/p>\n
New Trinity contains the gravesites of over 500 Black veterans whose stories had been largely forgotten before the restoration took place. Page said he feels the site is historically significant enough to become a destination for visitors.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re going to start having some classes out here that people can participate in,\u201d he added. \u201cWe\u2019re going to start fixing gravestones \u2013 not just the veteran stones. We\u2019re going to take care of everything out here.\u201d<\/p>\n
Pastor Kyev Tatum of\u00a0New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church<\/a>\u00a0said the public has \u201ca golden opportunity to secure the future\u201d of New Trinity and repay the veterans buried there for their service.<\/p>\n \u201cThey took the blows and the brunt of racism, discrimination and sexism because they, too, wanted America to know that we, too, are Americans,\u201d Tatum said.<\/p>\n Restoration and documentation efforts came in large part from the work of those in the criminal justice system serving community service sentences.<\/p>\n Officer Kelley Jenkins said some of those in\u00a0the Tarrant County Labor Detail<\/a>\u00a0unit who worked on the restoration felt strongly enough about it to come back as volunteers.<\/p>\n \u201cOur participants are super grateful and super proud of what they\u2019ve done,\u201d Jenkins told KERA. \u201cThey\u2019re just excited as we are.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThese guys, they could be sitting in jail, but they were out here with us and they\u2019re a part of history now,\u201d Jenkins said.<\/p>\n One of the trumpeters performing Taps, Leo Saenz, said it was an honor to be at the event, especially with the knowledge that his uncle is buried in the cemetery.<\/p>\n \u201cHistory is very important,\u201d Saenz said. \u201cIf we don\u2019t respect our history, especially those people that paved the way to get here, then we\u2019re in some troubled times.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tRelated\n<\/p>\n Fort Worth Report is certified by the Journalism Trust Initiative<\/a> for adhering to standards for ethical journalism.<\/p>\n Republish This Story<\/p>\n
