{"id":373063,"date":"2025-11-12T04:01:20","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T04:01:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/373063\/"},"modified":"2025-11-12T04:01:20","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T04:01:20","slug":"port-phillip-bay-dredging-turns-sea-black-broken-sewage-pipe-adds-to-rotten-eggs-odour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/373063\/","title":{"rendered":"Port Phillip Bay dredging turns sea black, broken sewage pipe adds to \u2018rotten eggs\u2019 odour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dredging has turned the colour of the sea at St Kilda beach jet black, but authorities say there is no immediate threat to people\u2019s health or the environment.<\/p>\n<p>A broken sewage pipe in nearby Acland Street is contributing to the foul odour caused by the dredging.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"People have been advised not to swim at St Kilda or touch the water while dredging is under way.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/8124cc38fc4c28df524158c563f02df9ed8169e1.jpeg\" height=\"390\" width=\"584\" \/><\/p>\n<p>People have been advised not to swim at St Kilda or touch the water while dredging is under way.Credit: Joe Armao<\/p>\n<p>St Kilda Marina has been dredging at the entrance channel near Blessington Street since Monday, as part of a week-long operation to deepen the channel to allow vessels to pass unhindered.<\/p>\n<p>Marina manager Judi Finn said the discolouration of the sand \u2013 which also turns the water black during dredging \u2013 was normal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do sand testing prior to any dredging works being done so we know it\u2019s not contaminated,\u201d she told this masthead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt comes out black and once it goes onto the beach they spread it out, and it dries and oxidises, and then it turns white.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Dredging at the entrance of the St Kilda Marina channel on Wednesday.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/acb03e48f5bce5bf205b705fe6f442d24f189204.jpeg\" height=\"349\" width=\"620\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dredging at the entrance of the St Kilda Marina channel on Wednesday.Credit: Joe Armao<\/p>\n<p>The deep colour of the sand comes from naturally occurring organic material, including decomposed plants and animals on the sea floor. As it is dredged up, sulphur is also released, contributing to the strong smell.<\/p>\n<p>Workers are currently dumping the dredged sand onto the beach at Shakespeare Grove, near Luna Park.
