{"id":37310,"date":"2025-07-04T06:00:08","date_gmt":"2025-07-04T06:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/37310\/"},"modified":"2025-07-04T06:00:08","modified_gmt":"2025-07-04T06:00:08","slug":"qantas-ceo-vanessa-hudson-apologises-to-customers-for-data-breach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/37310\/","title":{"rendered":"Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson apologises to customers for data breach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Qantas chief executive says the airline takes cybersecurity breaches &#8220;incredibly seriously&#8221; and has apologised to more than 6 million customers who received a personalised email on Wednesday, informing them that cybercriminals had broken through the company&#8217;s defences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;What I would first like to say is acknowledge the impact to all our customers and, first and foremost, I&#8217;d like to apologise to them,&#8221; Vanessa Hudson said in an interview with Channel Seven in Athens overnight.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;I know this data breach is a serious concern. I know the stress that it has created for many, many millions of customers.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And so, right up front, I want to say we take this seriously and we are going to do everything that we can to communicate transparently.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Hudson said the breach occurred when a cybercriminal infiltrated one of the airline&#8217;s call centres and accessed a service platform that enabled them to get access to customer data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said the criminals accessed &#8220;principally customer names, also phone numbers and frequent flyer numbers as well&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That is something that we are very concerned about and we are absolutely doing everything that we can to rectify this situation,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;What I can also say, though, is that the threat has been contained and the systems are now secure, and our number-one focus is to support customers through this process.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Hudson said the airline communicated with its customers &#8220;as quickly as possible&#8221; and it was being transparent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;I take absolute responsibility for the event that has occurred. As soon as I heard about it, I have focused on it basically 24\/7,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  Ms Hudson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Part of the steps that we&#8217;re taking [involves being] \u2026 really transparent with customers, but then also obviously next week we&#8217;ll be following up and giving our customers the information that they need to understand how the specific data pertaining to them has potentially been breached in this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;Qantas says cybercriminals getting more sophisticated\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Hudson said the company had invested &#8220;tens of millions&#8221; of dollars in cyber security and &#8220;that&#8217;s been increasing year on year&#8221; but criminals were getting more sophisticated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-07-03\/what-to-do-if-your-data-is-stolen-in-qantas-breach\/105487196\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">What the Qantas cyber attack could mean for your data<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Cybersecurity experts are warning Qantas customers to remain vigilant to scams and hacking attempts in coming days, after as many as 6 million Australians were caught up in a data breach<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We take cybersecurity incredibly seriously, and we have got absolute focus right across our organisation, from training to system controls to system alerts in this instance,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;Unfortunately, the cybercriminal was able to get through.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Hudson said Qantas was now working with the federal government to &#8220;investigate this right through to the end&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;These are criminal cybercriminals and we have involved the AFP and we&#8217;ve involved the government cybersecurity team,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She noted the cybercriminals did not get access to customers&#8217; passport information, credit card information or password information.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;Your frequent flyer accounts, from a customer perspective, are secure,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We have not had passport information breached. We have not had credit card information breached and we have not had password information breached.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">An AFP spokesperson told ABC News it was now investigating the Qantas cyber breach.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;The airline has been highly engaged in assisting authorities and the AFP with investigating this incident,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Further comment will be provided at an appropriate time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;Airline building defences against future breaches<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Hudson said Qantas had provided &#8220;significant training&#8221; to employees but cybercriminals were getting more apt at breaching security measures.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;We are going to learn from this. We are going to do a full investigation,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Hudson said the airline had now &#8220;strengthened and increased controls&#8221; and would continue to build its defences against future breaches. But she said the reality for all organisations was &#8220;we live in a world where our cybercriminals are global&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They [cybercriminals] are good at what they do. They are constantly innovating in terms of what we do. And so that is why we are constantly going to be improving our systems as we go forward as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The company&#8217;s reputation has been battered in recent years.
