LaSalle St., became the first of its kind in the United States \u2014 a &#8220;drive-in&#8221; bank where customers didn&#8217;t have to leave their automobiles in order to make a deposit. (Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1946:<\/strong> Exchange National Bank of Chicago, 130 S. LaSalle St., Chicago \u2014 which called itself the \u201cmost modern bank in the world\u201d \u2014 opened the first <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-bank-for-use-of-autoists\/184747751\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cpill boxes\u201d<\/a> in the United States. The <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-first-complete-autobank\/184747684\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drive-up windows<\/a> allowed customers to drive into the building and meet directly with tellers at the \u201cautobank\u201d while still in their automobiles. The drive-in had 10 teller windows with bulletproof glass and automatic slide-out drawers.<\/p>\n<p>The first deposit was made by <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-eb-mayer-makes-first-d\/184748287\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">E.B. Mayer<\/a>, whose grandfather formerly lived at the site. The bank was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/1989\/07\/27\/lasalle-to-acquire-exchange-bank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acquired<\/a> by LaSalle National Bank of Chicago in 1989. (Chicago Tribune historical photo)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1959:<\/strong> Chicago White Sox second baseman and future Hall of Famer <a href=\"https:\/\/baseballhall.org\/hall-of-famers\/fox-nellie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nellie Fox<\/a> won the <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-nellie-fox-of-chicago-wh\/184752092\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American\u2019s League\u2019s Most Valuable Player<\/a> award. Two of his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2024\/09\/19\/vintage-chicago-tribune-remembering-go-go-white-sox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cGo-Go White Sox\u201d<\/a> teammates \u2014 shortstop <a href=\"https:\/\/baseballhall.org\/hall-of-famers\/aparicio-luis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luis Aparicio<\/a> and pitcher <a href=\"https:\/\/baseballhall.org\/hall-of-famers\/wynn-early\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Early Wynn<\/a> \u2014 placed second and third in the voting.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Earle T. (William Yates\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1967:<\/strong>\u00a0Naperville executive\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2018\/02\/06\/50-years-ago-a-naperville-executive-plotted-to-murder-his-wife-and-almost-blew-up-a-plane\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2018\/02\/06\/50-years-ago-a-naperville-executive-plotted-to-murder-his-wife-and-almost-blew-up-a-plane\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Earle T. Cook placed a bomb<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 intended to kill his wife \u2014 on an American Airlines flight from Chicago\u2019s O\u2019Hare International Airport to San Diego. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-chicago-plane-hit-by-a-b\/184692360\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-chicago-plane-hit-by-a-b\/184692360\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bomb malfunctioned<\/a>\u00a0during the flight, but caused no injuries.
