I didn\u2019t know what it was. I would go and check the stove in the kitchen and make sure all the gas was off in the kitchen,\u201d the Beverly Hills Cop star says in the Netflix film.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_8-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cAnd I\u2019d lay down for about, you know, five minutes, and I would get back up and go back in the kitchen and look at the stove again and check all the gas, and then I\u2019d go back in the bed and lay there for about five, 10 minutes and then get back up and go look at it and look at the stove and make sure all the gas was off. Then go back to bed, lay there for another 10 minutes and get back \u2014 and this went on for maybe like an hour. And I did that every night,\u201d Murphy, who grew up in New York, recalls.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_10-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> &#8220;Every night. And I\u2019d just say, \u2018That\u2019s just some weird s&#8212; that I do.\u2019 My mother, nobody knew this was going on. And I used to make a goofy sound. I used to go \u2018uh-mm-mm\u2019 and do that all the time. You\u2019re just sitting there watching TV going \u2018uh-mm, uh-mm,\u2019 \u201d continues Murphy.<\/p>\n<p> A young Eddie Murphy in &#8216;Being Eddie&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Eddie Murphy\/Courtesy of Netflix<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_15-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> &#8220;Then one day I was watching the news and they did something on OCD, and it was like, \u2018Oh, that\u2019s what I \u2014 I be doing s&#8212; like that.\u2019 I said, \u2018Oh.\u2019 I was like, \u2018Oh, mental illness?\u2019&#8230; And when I saw that it was like some mental illness s&#8212;, I made myself stop doing it. I was like, \u2018I\u2019m not \u2014 I\u2019m not doing it no more. I thought I was weird. I ain\u2019t know I had some mental illness. F&#8212; that. I ain\u2019t have no mental illness. Mental illness, my ass.\u2019 And I forced myself to stop doing it.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_17-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Obsessive-compulsive disorder \u201cfeatures a pattern of unwanted thoughts and fears known as obsessions,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/obsessive-compulsive-disorder\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20354432\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to the Mayo Clinic<\/a>. &#8220;These obsessions lead you to do repetitive behaviors, also called compulsions. These obsessions and compulsions get in the way of daily activities and cause a lot of distress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_21-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Murphy concludes the segment in the documentary by acknowledging that his compulsions haven\u2019t completely dissipated. \u201cI check the gas every night, still. But every now and then, I\u2019ll check it twice, and say \u2018No, motherf&#8212;er, you ain\u2019t starting that s&#8212; again.
