{"id":374455,"date":"2025-11-12T21:54:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T21:54:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/374455\/"},"modified":"2025-11-12T21:54:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T21:54:10","slug":"judge-orders-release-of-hundreds-arrested-during-chicago-immigration-raids-chicago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/374455\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge orders release of hundreds arrested during Chicago immigration raids | Chicago"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A federal judge has ordered the release of hundreds of people who were arrested over the last few months in the Chicago area amid the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/trump-administration\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump administration<\/a>\u2019s aggressive immigration raids across the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Wednesday, US district judge Jeffrey Cummings ordered the justice department to produce a list showing which of the 615 possible class members are still in custody by 19 November, the Chicago Tribune <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/11\/12\/federal-judge-says-hell-order-release-of-hundreds-of-operation-midway-blitz-arrestees-on-bond\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">According to Cummings, he would allow the members\u2019 release on a $1,500 bond as long as they have no criminal history or prior removal order. The ACLU of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/illinois\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Illinois<\/a> said that the order will mean the immediate release of 13 people who have been detained by federal officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">As part of Wednesday\u2019s order, Cummings also prohibited the government from pressuring detainees to agree to voluntary deportation while their cases are pending, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/chicago\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago<\/a> Tribune added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The order comes after Donald Trump\u2019s Operation Midway Blitz launched a series of aggressive immigration raids across Chicago during which federal agents have been accused of using excessive force against protesters including deploying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/nov\/08\/border-patrol-gregory-bovino-chicago\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tear gas<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/nov\/11\/ice-agents-pepper-spray-man-baby-daughter\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pepper spray<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In a statement to the Guardian, ACLU\u2019s Illinois chapter hailed Cummings\u2019 decision, with its deputy legal director Michelle Garcia noting the 13 immediate releases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIn addition, more than 600 additional individuals may be released in a week on bond or ankle monitoring, while the parties determine if their arrests violated the consent decree,\u201d Garcia added, referencing a 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/immigrantjustice.org\/for-attorneys\/cases\/castanon-nava-et-al-v-dhs-et-al\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">consent decree<\/a> that had been previously established concerning warrantless arrests in the Chicago area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The ACLU and the National Immigrant Justice Center had <a href=\"https:\/\/capitolnewsillinois.com\/news\/court-scrutiny-of-ice-mounts-as-judge-rules-warrantless-arrests-violated-order\/amp\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">filed a lawsuit<\/a> over allegations that federal agents violated the 2022 agreement by issuing warrantless arrests amid the latest immigration crackdowns across the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Garcia went on to say: \u201cMost importantly, the court committed to enforcing our agreement with the federal government \u2013 a step that creates a pathway for even more of the hundreds of people illegally arrested and detained during Operation Midway Blitz to be released.
