{"id":374558,"date":"2025-11-12T22:55:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T22:55:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/374558\/"},"modified":"2025-11-12T22:55:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T22:55:11","slug":"florida-state-board-of-education-to-vote-on-adopting-the-heritage-foundations-education-pledge-action-news-jax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/374558\/","title":{"rendered":"Florida State Board of Education to vote on adopting the Heritage Foundation\u2019s education pledge \u2013 Action News Jax"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 The State Board of Education is set to vote on whether to adopt the Heritage Foundation\u2019s education pledge, \u2018The Phoenix Declaration,\u2019 into the Florida education system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">The Heritage Foundation is a conservative think tank whose mission is to: <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cHeritage\u2019s mission is to formulate and promote conservative public policies based on the principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">The Phoenix Declaration lists several key principles the Heritage Foundation believes should guide American families, schools, and policymakers in creating an American vision of Education.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Those values include Parental Choice and Responsibility, Transparency &amp; Accountability, Truth &amp; Goodness, Cultural Transmission, Character Formation, Academic Excellence, and Citizenship<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cThe Phoenix Declaration codifies a lot of the policies that Governor DeSantis has championed here in Florida,\u201d said Florida Education Commissioner Anastasios Kamoutsas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Action News Jax\u2019s Madison Foglio asked Commissioner Kamoutsas if this pledge would influence school curriculum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ll give you an example. As we do our instructional material review, when we talk about objective factual truth, you can rest assured that as we review these textbooks, we\u2019re going to make sure that that principle is seen throughout that process, as well as academic and curriculum transparency,\u201d said Commissioner Kamoutsas. \u201cWe\u2019re going to make sure we give the public the opportunity to weigh in and provide public comment when we review those textbooks to hear from all relevant education stakeholders what are some of the pros and what are the cons within these books.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Andrew Spar is the President of the Florida Education Association. He says he does not support the declaration for several reasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cThe reality of it is this is a document about indoctrinating people with their beliefs, and it\u2019s trying to couch it in a way with very coded wording,\u201d said Spar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Spar says the Phoenix Declaration is pushing an agenda. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cIf you look at the Phoenix Declaration, it says things like we shouldn\u2019t force ideology in schools, yet this is forcing ideology in school,\u201d said Spar. \u201cThis overregulation, this forcing of a specific ideology into our schools is counter to what we need to do in our schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">State Education Commissioner Anastasios Kamoutsas is co-introducing this pledge to the State Board of Education tomorrow. Action News Jax asked him if this declaration is pushing a conservative ideology into Florida schools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cI think that people are simply trying to paint the picture that what is being presented through this Phoenix Declaration is ideological, simply because its affiliation with the Heritage Foundation,\u201d said Commissioner Kamoutsas. \u201cBut the reality is it\u2019s objective and it\u2019s factual and it principles that we all should agree with an education policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Action News Jax reached out to Duval, Nassau, Clay, and St. Johns County public school districts and asked them what each district\u2019s position is on the declaration and how they plan on implementing it if passed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Only DCPS got back to us, saying: <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cDuval County Public Schools will implement and support policies as directed by Florida law and the State Board of Education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">If passed, this would make Florida the first state to adopt the Heritage Foundation\u2019s education pledge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">The vote is set to take place on Thursday at 9 a.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">You can view the Phoenix Declaration and agenda item here: <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>&gt;&gt;&gt;
