JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 A Jacksonville woman is recovering after she said she was hit by a drunk driver on Halloween night.<\/p>\n
Lillian Rapske was leaving her family\u2019s house in Fernandina Beach and heading back to Jacksonville when police said that the driver hit her from behind on U.S. Highway 17. <\/p>\n
>>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <\/b><\/a><\/p>\n The crash happened in an instant.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is not happening; this is not real,\u201d said Rapske. \u201cThis can\u2019t be real, and then it became very real, very quick.\u201d<\/p>\n The impact sent her car off the roadway.<\/p>\n \u201cI didn\u2019t want to go into incoming traffic, so I went into the tree line through the ditch,\u201d said Rapske.<\/p>\n She was taken to the hospital and is now recovering from multiple injuries.<\/p>\n \u201cMy left lung was completely collapsed, and I have broken ribs on the left side,\u201d said Rapske. \u201cOn the right side, I have a fractured wrist and a severely sprained knee.\u201d<\/p>\n The other driver who is facing DUI charges is now just one of over 1600 DUI arrests that the Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office has made so far this year.<\/p>\n Rapske is encouraging other drivers to think twice before getting behind the wheel while impaired, especially during the holiday season.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s unforgivable and frankly super avoidable in this day and age,\u201d said Rapske. \u201cHave a plan in place. Be prepared. Know I\u2019m going to take an Uber. Know I\u2019m going to take a Lyft. Know I\u2019m going to have a designated driver.\u201d<\/p>\n A GoFundMe was created for Lillian.
