{"id":374943,"date":"2025-11-13T02:35:13","date_gmt":"2025-11-13T02:35:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/374943\/"},"modified":"2025-11-13T02:35:13","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T02:35:13","slug":"neanderthals-may-never-have-truly-gone-extinct-study-reveals-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/374943\/","title":{"rendered":"Neanderthals May Never Have Truly Gone Extinct, Study Reveals : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/neanderthals\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73037\" data-postid=\"181091\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Neanderthals<\/a> may have never truly gone extinct, according to new research \u2013 at least not in the genetic sense.<\/p>\n<p>A new mathematical model has explored a fascinating scenario in which Neanderthals gradually disappeared not through &#8220;true extinction&#8221; but through genetic absorption into a more prolific species:<\/p>\n<p>Us.<\/p>\n<p>According to the analysis, the long and drawn-out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/humans-and-neanderthals-had-a-longer-more-intertwined-relationship-than-we-thought\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;love affair&#8217;<\/a> between Homo sapiens and Neanderthals could have led to almost complete genetic absorption within 10,000\u201330,000 years.<\/p>\n<p><b>Related: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/mysterious-twist-revealed-in-saga-of-human-neanderthal-hybrid-child\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Mysterious Twist Revealed in Saga of Human-Neanderthal Hybrid Child<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The model is simple and not regional, but it provides a &#8220;robust explanation for the observed  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/neanderthals\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73037\" data-postid=\"181091\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Neanderthal<\/a> demise,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41598-025-22376-6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">argue<\/a> computational chemist Andrea Amadei from the University of Rome Tor Vergata and his colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>Once, the idea that Neanderthals and Homo sapiens interbred was a radical notion, and yet now, modern genome studies and archaeological evidence have provided strong evidence that our two lineages <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/eurasian-genome-study-finds-humans-and-neanderthals-had-sex-with-each-other-a-lot\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">were hooking up and reproducing right across Eurasia<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/neanderthals-and-early-humans-did-the-dirty-deed-way-more-than-we-thought\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tens of thousands of years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Today, people of non-African ancestry have inherited about <a href=\"https:\/\/elifesciences.org\/articles\/80757\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1 to 4 percent<\/a> of their DNA from Neanderthals.<\/p>\n<p>No one knows why Neanderthals disappeared from the face of our planet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/modern-humans-thrived-while-neanderthals-disappeared-but-not-due-to-our-brains\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">roughly 40,000 years ago<\/a>, but experts tend to agree that there are probably numerous factors that played a role, like environmental changes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/neanderthal-extinction-linked-to-genetic-crisis-100000-years-ago\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">loss of genetic diversity<\/a>, or competition with Homo sapiens.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Mid-Article-Promo-Astro-1-1-642x272.jpg\" alt=\"Neanderthals May Have Never Truly Gone Extinct, New Study Suggests\" width=\"642\" height=\"272\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-181118\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Amadei and co-authors \u2013 evolutionary geneticist Giulia Lin from the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, and ecologist Simone Fattorini from the University of L&#8217;Aquila in Italy \u2013 present a model that does not rule out these other explanations.<\/p>\n<p>It does suggest that genetic drift played a strong role \u2013 even with the researchers assuming the Neanderthal genes our species &#8216;absorbed&#8217; had no survival benefit.<\/p>\n<p>If the model were to include the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/there-s-something-curious-about-human-pregnancy-and-we-might-have-neanderthals-to-thank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">potential advantages<\/a> of some Neanderthal genes to the larger Homo sapiens population, then mathematical support for genetic dilution may become even stronger.<\/p>\n<p>Like all models, this new one is based on imperfect assumptions. It uses the birth rates of modern hunter-gatherer tribes to predict how quickly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/neanderthal-lineage-was-isolated-for-an-astonishing-50000-years\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">small Neanderthal tribes<\/a> would be engulfed by a much larger human population, given how frequently it seems we were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/we-may-have-found-where-modern-humans-and-neanderthals-became-one\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">interbreeding<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/FossilEvidenceOfNeandertalAndHumansCoexistingInWesternEurasia-642x509.jpg\" alt=\"Neanderthals May Have Never Actually Gone Extinct, Study Reveals\" width=\"642\" height=\"509\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-181203\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A map of western Eurasia showing when and where fossil evidence suggests that Neanderthals and Homo sapiens coexisted. Ross\/Wikimedia Commons\/CC BY-SA 4.0<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The results are consistent with recent archaeological discoveries and align with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/it-took-waves-of-modern-humans-to-claim-europe-from-neanderthals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">body of evidence<\/a> that suggests the decline of Neanderthals in Europe was gradual rather than sudden.<\/p>\n<p>Homo sapiens seem to have started migrating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-first-humans-out-of-africa-werent-quite-who-we-thought\" style=\"letter-spacing: -0.025em;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">out of Africa<\/a> much earlier than scientists previously thought, and they arrived in Europe in several influxes, possibly starting <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/science.adi1768\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more than 200,000 years ago<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As each wave of migration came crashing into the region, it engulfed local Neanderthal communities, diluting their genes, like sand pulled into the sea.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ThreeMigrationWaves-642x601.png\" alt=\"Three Migration Waves\" width=\"642\" height=\"601\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-94383\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Three waves of Homo sapiens migration out of Africa and into Europe based on tool evidence. Our lineages, they say, should not be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/neanderthals-might-not-be-the-separate-species-we-always-thought\" style=\"letter-spacing: -0.025em;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">regarded<\/a> as two separate species, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/archaic-humans-might-actually-be-the-same-species-as-us-study-suggests\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rather<\/a> as distinct populations belonging to a &#8220;common human species.&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Neanderthals were<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/surprising-signs-of-neanderthal-adaptability-discovered-in-ancient-rock-shelter\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> surprisingly adaptable<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/mysterious-fossils-suggest-neanderthals-were-capable-of-abstract-thought\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> intelligent<\/a>.
