Online<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, making the one-cent coin really did cost a pretty penny.<\/p>\n<p>After 232 years in circulation \u2014 nearly as long as the United States of America has been a country \u2014 the final penny was minted Nov. 12 in Philadelphia by United States Treasurer Brandon Beach.<\/p>\n<p>For the historic event, the United States Mint held a ceremonial strike to commemorate the end of the one-cent coin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday the Mint celebrates 232 years of penny manufacturing,\u201d acting Mint Director Kristie McNally shared in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmint.gov\/news\/press-releases\/united-states-mint-hosts-historic-ceremonial-strike-for-final-production-of-the-circulating-one-cent-coin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a>. \u201cWhile general production concludes today, the penny\u2019s legacy lives on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although no more pennies will be created, there are still an estimated 300 billion copper coins in circulation \u2014 that\u2019s $3 billion in value \u2014 and can still be used. (Plus, some <a href=\"https:\/\/bullionsharks.com\/blog\/top-100-pennies-worth-money\/?srsltid=AfmBOooloKx70j-XaraTNgHYIFL4ConzpoomIIigRwKRppEQNBNot1-F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">previously minted pennies<\/a> are worth up to $1.7 million.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs its usage in commerce continues to evolve,\u201d McNally continued, \u201cits significance in America\u2019s story will endure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After being authorized by the Coinage Act of 1792, the penny has played a major role in both business and culture. While \u201ccharm pricing\u201d uses the coin\u2019s one cent value as a marketing tactic to make items appear cheaper \u2014 after all, $19.99 is less than $20 \u2014 the penny has also inspired fashion, by way of penny loafer shoes, and movies, such as 1936\u2019s Oscar-nominated Pennies From Heaven and its 1982 Oscar-nominated remake starring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/steve_martin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Steve Martin<\/a> and Bernadette Peters. <\/p>\n<p><b>READ<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1423820\/hailey-bieber-on-s1-billion-rhode-sale-plans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> What Hailey Bieber Wants to Do With Money From $1 Billion Rhode Sale<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As for why the penny will no longer be produced? As it turns out, it costs more to create the one-cent coin than it is actually worth. In fact, the U.S. Mint noted \u201cthe cost of producing each penny has risen from 1.42 cents to 3.69 cents per penny.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following the news of the penny\u2019s death, social media users had an array of reactions, many of which leaned into humor. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what am I going to give people for their thoughts now?\u201d one user wrote on <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JollyRogX\/status\/1988692543891206326\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">X (formerly Twitter)<\/a>, as another quipped, \u201cThis doesn&#8217;t make any cents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a parody account purporting to be the late President Abraham Lincoln, who had graced the front of the penny since 1909, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/The16thUSPrez\/status\/1988704695742005486\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>, \u201cWell this f&#8211;king sucks.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBefore cleaning out your loose change, make sure you&#8217;re not accidentally giving away a rare penny worth thousands of dollars.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Originally appeared on E!
