(Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1909:<\/strong> The third-deadliest coal mine disaster in United States history \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-mine-on-fire-entombs-391\/184814680\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cherry Mine Fire<\/a> in Cherry, Illinois, a town of 500 about 90 miles southwest of Chicago \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2006\/01\/05\/illinois-disaster-all-but-forgotten\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">killed 259 men and boys<\/a>. According to the University of Illinois, the fire started when a cart carrying hay (to feed mules, which pulled coal carts) <a href=\"https:\/\/guides.library.illinois.edu\/c.php?g=416856&amp;p=2840930\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ignited and spread<\/a> to the mine\u2019s wood infrastructure.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"i84pgg5Sb6\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2022\/10\/27\/vintage-chicago-tribune-disasters-crashes-fires-riots-and-more-from-illinois-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vintage Chicago Tribune: Disasters!!!!! Crashes, fires, riots and more from Illinois history.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It was the first time in this country that the concept of worker\u2019s compensation was applied, and it led to the creation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/miss\/learn\/management\/bomhist.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Bureau of Mines<\/a>. (AP)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1938:<\/strong>\u00a0Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini became the first U.S. citizen beatified by the Roman Catholic Church as part of a Mass presided over by Pope Pius XI and celebrated by Chicago\u2019s first cardinal, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2024\/03\/21\/vintage-chicago-tribune-mundeleins-highlights-a-century-after-his-elevation-to-cardinal\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2024\/03\/21\/vintage-chicago-tribune-mundeleins-highlights-a-century-after-his-elevation-to-cardinal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">George Mundelein<\/a>, who also officiated at Cabrini\u2019s funeral.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"ey3XwoVszK\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/07\/10\/vintage-chicago-tribune-mother-cabrinis-chicago-milestones-on-her-path-to-sainthood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vintage Chicago Tribune: Mother Cabrini\u2019s Chicago milestones on her path to sainthood<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The radio broadcast of the ceremony marked the first one delivered by an American prelate from St. Peter\u2019s Basilica in Vatican City. (Jos\u00e9 Mor\u00e9\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1984: <\/strong>Chicago Cubs second baseman <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-sporting-news-awards-go\/177795412\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ryne Sandberg<\/a> was named the National League\u2019s MVP.<\/p>\n<p>Sandberg \u2014 who hit .314 in 156 games for the fourth-best mark in the league, and got 22 of the 24 first-place votes \u2014 was the first Cub since\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-ernie-banks-and-nellie-f\/177794440\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-ernie-banks-and-nellie-f\/177794440\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cMr. Cub\u201d Ernie Banks<\/a> in 1959 to receive the honor.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"WSptCkxDks\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/07\/31\/vintage-chicago-tribune-ryne-sandberg-cubs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vintage Chicago Tribune: Remembering Ryne Sandberg, the Chicago Cubs Hall of Famer<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But Sandberg wasn\u2019t present at Wrigley Field to receive the award \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-sandberg-cruises-to-mvp\/177794221\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-sandberg-cruises-to-mvp\/177794221\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he was at sea<\/a>\u00a0as part of a team cruise.
