{"id":376211,"date":"2025-11-13T15:39:13","date_gmt":"2025-11-13T15:39:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/376211\/"},"modified":"2025-11-13T15:39:13","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T15:39:13","slug":"401k-contribution-limits-2026-irs-increases-savings-cap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/376211\/","title":{"rendered":"401(k) contribution limits 2026: IRS increases savings cap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Maskot | Digitalvision | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The IRS has announced new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/401k\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">401(k)<\/a> contribution limits\u00a0for 2026.<\/p>\n<p>In its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/401k-limit-increases-to-24500-for-2026-ira-limit-increases-to-7500\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">release<\/a> on Thursday, the agency increased the employee deferral limit to $24,500 next year, up from $23,500 in 2025. The change applies to 401(k)s, 403(b)s and most 457 plans, along with the federal Thrift Savings Plan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The IRS also unveiled 2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/11\/13\/401-k-catch-up-contribution-limits-2026.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">catch-up contribution limits<\/a> for savers age 50 and older, new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/11\/13\/2026-ira-contribution-limits-irs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">individual retirement account savings limits<\/a> and higher income thresholds for Roth IRA contributions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Starting in 2026, the 401(k) catch-up contribution limit will rise to $8,000 for savers 50 and older, from $7,500 in 2025. But investors aged 60 to 63 can instead save an extra $11,250, based on changes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/01\/03\/3-changes-in-secure-2point0-for-required-minimum-distributions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enacted via Secure 2.0<\/a>. The average <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/06\/24\/average-401k-savings-rate.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">combined savings rate<\/a>, including employer deposits, was an estimated 12%, according to the same report.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A separate report found the average 401(k) savings rate, including employee and employer contributions, was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fidelity.com\/about-fidelity\/Q2-2025-retirement-analysis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">combined 14.2%<\/a> during the second quarter of 2025, according to a Fidelity Investments analysis of more than 25,000 corporate plans and 24.6 million participants.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The IRS announcement comes hours after President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/11\/12\/government-shutdown-house-vote-trump.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed into law<\/a> a funding bill to end the longest federal government shutdown in U.S. history. It also comes roughly a month<strong> <\/strong>after the agency released dozens of inflation adjustments for 2026, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/10\/09\/2026-federal-tax-brackets.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">federal income tax brackets<\/a>, higher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/10\/09\/capital-gains-tax-2026-federal.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">capital gains brackets<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/10\/10\/irs-2026-tax-changes-child-tax-credit-family-refunds.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">provisions impacting families<\/a>, among others.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Maskot | Digitalvision | Getty Images The IRS has announced new\u00a0401(k) contribution limits\u00a0for 2026.
