Credit: Wikimedia Commons \/ U.S. Air Force photo by Kara Carrier<\/p>\n<p>San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg has filed paperwork to run for Bexar County Judge, all but confirming the nature of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacurrent.com\/news\/former-san-antonio-mayor-ron-nirenberg-teases-big-announcement-for-nov-17\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cbig announcement\u201d he plans to make this Saturday<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacurrent.com\/news\/san-antonio-news\/ron-sakai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Speculation has swirled<\/a> in recent weeks that Nirenberg will challenge first-term Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai in the Democratic primary. Now, paperwork filed this week showing the former mayor has selected a campaign treasurer shows the talk is more than wild speculation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/edocs.bexar.org\/elections\/appt11102025ronnirenberg.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The document<\/a> names Nirenberg\u2019s treasurer as personal injury attorney Jorge Herrera, and it lists the office he\u2019s seeking as \u201cBexar County Judge.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Nirenberg served as San Antonio mayor from 2017 to 2025 and was prohibited from running again due to term limits. <\/p>\n<p>Political observers began chattering as early as this summer that Nirenberg was\u00a0<a style=\"box-sizing: inherit; font-family: Lato, Helvetica, sans-serif; white-space: normal;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sacurrent.com\/news\/former-san-antonio-mayor-ron-nirenberg-looking-into-run-for-governors-office-sources-say-37897559\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weighing a run for governor<\/a>\u00a0or another state-level office.\u00a0However, his ambitions \u2014\u00a0at least for now \u2014\u00a0appear to lie closer to home. <\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacurrent.com\/news\/san-antonio-news\/former-mayor-ron-nirenberg-could-run-against-county-judge-peter-sakai-in-2026-primary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survey<\/a>\u00a0by San Antonio-based Democratic strategist Christian Archer shows Nirenberg winning by a 52%-26% landslide in a theoretical primary matchup against Sakai, who\u2019s approaching the end of his first term.<\/p>\n<p>For the record, Sakai is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacurrent.com\/news\/san-antonio-news\/sakai-fbpost\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">none too happy<\/a> about speculation that he would face a primary challenge. In a recent Facebook post, he called it \u201cdisappointing\u201d that Nirenberg would stir up a fight among local Dems instead cooperating to \u201clift up our community.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Social media posts show Nirenberg is moving ahead with plans to make his \u201cbig announcement\u201d at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Backyard on Broadway, 2411 Broadway.<\/p>\n<p
