The United States ended production of the penny on Wednesday, more than two centuries since the one-cent coin first went into circulation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The move is part of an effort to retire the country\u2019s smallest denomination, which had cost nearly four times its value to produce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The country\u2019s final pennies were pressed at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia, where they\u2019ve been produced since 1793, a year after Congress authorized the Coinage Act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The last two pennies were stamped with a special marking and will not go into circulation. <a rel=\"noopener\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/unlucky-penny-us-mint-philadelphia-134534859.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:According to the Associated Press;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" target=\"_blank\">According to the Associated Press<\/a>, the government plans to auction them off in the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In a statement, the Treasury Department said that \u201congoing increases in production costs and the evolution in consumer habits and technology have made its production financially untenable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The last coin before the penny to be discontinued was the half-cent in 1857. And there could be more change to come.<\/p>\n<p>What led to the penny\u2019s death?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">For years, retailers and lawmakers have been advocating for the U.S. to abolish the penny. In February, President Trump ordered Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to halt penny production, saying it was \u201cso wasteful.\u201d A bill introduced in Congress earlier this year called <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/house-bill\/3074\/text\" data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:the Common Cents Act;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">the Common Cents Act <\/a>would formalize Trump\u2019s order. It has not yet been passed.<\/p>\n<p>How much did each penny cost to produce?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.usmint.gov\/news\/press-releases\/united-states-mint-hosts-historic-ceremonial-strike-for-final-production-of-the-circulating-one-cent-coin\" data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:According to the U.S. Mint;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">According to the U.S. Mint<\/a>, the cost of producing each penny is 3.69 cents per coin \u2014 more than triple its face value.\u00a0 By no longer producing pennies, the U.S. is expected to save an estimated $56 million annually.<\/p>\n<p>How many pennies are in circulation?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">There are currently an estimated 300 billion pennies in circulation, according to the Treasury Department.<\/p>\n<p>Can you still use pennies?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Yes. The penny &#8220;remains legal tender and will retain its value indefinitely,&#8221; the Treasury Department said.<\/p>\n<p>Will banks stop accepting pennies?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">No. You can still deposit pennies at the bank. In fact, the American Banking Association <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.aba.com\/news-research\/analysis-guides\/faq-phasing-out-the-penny\" data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:is encouraging people;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">is encouraging people<\/a> to bring them to the bank to help ease any shortages.<\/p>\n<p>What happens if a store runs out of pennies?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In recent weeks retailers <a rel=\"noopener\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/got-exact-change-penny-shortages-005044612.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:have expressed concerns;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" target=\"_blank\">have expressed concerns<\/a> that their supplies of pennies are running low. To cope, some have rounded prices down to the nearest nickel.<\/p>\n<p>Are nickels and dimes next?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Nickels? Maybe. For nearly two decades, both the penny and nickel have cost more to produce than they are worth, per U.S. Mint figures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Dimes, though, cost roughly 6 cents to produce.
