(File photo by James Miller/Times of San Diego)

Students with the San Diego Unified School District continue to make strong progress across what officials call “key performance indicators.”

Those indicators include absenteeism, suspension rates, and graduation rates, among others.

The district said that according to the 2025 California School Dashboard, which provides real-time, district-wide data on student performance, six out of seven of those indicators improved measurably over the year before.

“These results reflect the dedication and collaboration of our educators, staff, and families—and the resilience and hard work of our students,” said SDUSD superintendent Dr. Fabi Bagula in a statement.

“While we are proud of this progress, we remain committed to closing equity gaps so that every student thrives.”

The news was not all optimistic. The progress of English learners declined slightly to 46.2%, and foster youth and long-term English learners continue to face persistent academic challenges, particularly in mathematics.

However, San Diego Unified has pulled ahead of four other large urban districts — Los Angeles, Fresno, Long Beach, and San Francisco — in five categories: English language arts, mathematics, lower chronic absenteeism rates, and improved college and career indicators.

San Diego Unified’s “Student Achievement Goals,” which guide the district’s academic and wellness priorities, also showed improvements in several categories: student wellness, communication and literacy skills, problem-solving and mathematics skills, and college and career readiness.

More information about the 2025 California School Dashboard can be found here.

READ NEXT

SDUSD Superintendent Fabi Bagula speaks at a press conference at Clairemont High School.
