{"id":37664,"date":"2025-07-04T09:06:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-04T09:06:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/37664\/"},"modified":"2025-07-04T09:06:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-04T09:06:12","slug":"lawmakers-want-more-info-from-banks-about-zelle-payments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/37664\/","title":{"rendered":"Lawmakers Want More Info From Banks About Zelle Payments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three members of Congress said Thursday (July 3) that they sent a letter to each of the banks that own the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zellepay.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zelle<\/a> peer-to-peer (P2P) payment platform, asking what those banks are doing to combat social media scams.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The letters were prompted by a proliferation of these scams and by the decision of one of the banks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpmorganchase.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">J.P. Morgan Chase<\/a>, to block Zelle payments that originate from social media, the <a href=\"https:\/\/democrats-financialservices.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">House Financial Services Committee Democrats<\/a> said in a Thursday <a href=\"https:\/\/democrats-financialservices.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=413572\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Letters were sent to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bankofamerica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bank of America<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitalone.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Capital One<\/a>, J.P. Morgan Chase, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnc.com\/en\/personal-banking.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PNC<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truist.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Truist<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usbank.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Bank<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellsfargo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wells Fargo<\/a>. They were signed by Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/waters.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maxine Waters<\/a> of California, Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.warren.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elizabeth Warren<\/a> of Massachusetts and Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blumenthal.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Richard Blumenthal<\/a> of Connecticut.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cZelle facilitated over $1 trillion in payments in 2024, a 27% increase from the year prior,\u201d the members of Congress wrote in the letters. \u201cAnd as the use of the platform grows, so does the opportunity for fraud and scams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saying the members of Congress want to better understand each bank\u2019s policies regarding fraud and scams on Zelle and other P2P platforms, the <a href=\"https:\/\/democrats-financialservices.house.gov\/uploadedfiles\/07.02.2025_cmwew_ltr_boa_re_zelle.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> sent to six of the seven banks asks for data about scams and fraud associated with social media, Zelle, and other P2P platforms; the bank\u2019s policies and procedures on reimbursing consumers who report these scams; and the steps the bank is taking to protect consumers from these scams.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A separate <a href=\"https:\/\/democrats-financialservices.house.gov\/uploadedfiles\/07.02.2025_cmwew_ltr_jpm_re_zelle.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> sent to J.P. Morgan Chase also asks that bank how it came to the decision to block Zelle transactions that originate on social media.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reached by PYMNTS, J.P. Morgan Chase, PNC, Truist and U.S. Bank declined to comment on the letters. The other three banks did not immediately reply to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Zelle spokesperson told PYMNTS in an emailed statement that criminals are targeting Americans through a variety of channels \u2014 including phone calls, text messages, emails, social media and online marketplaces \u2014 and that law enforcement, government and private industry should work together to protect Americans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cZelle is leading the fight against scams and fraud and has industry-leading reimbursement policies that go above and beyond the law,\u201d the statement said. \u201cIt is relied upon by more than 150 million enrolled American users and today more than 99.95 percent of all transactions on the platform are completed without any report of scam or fraud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">J.P.
