(AP) \u2014 The latest city bracing for the Trump administration\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/immigration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">immigration<\/a> crackdown is Charlotte, North Carolina, which could see an influx of federal agents as early as this weekend, a county sheriff said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden said in a statement that two federal officials confirmed a plan for <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/immigration-chicago-arrests-police-federal-5c21bcb2cd890fcb086480469c1a3a96\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Customs and Border Protection<\/a> agents to start an enforcement operation Saturday or early next week in North Carolina\u2019s largest city. His office declined to identify those officials. McFadden said details about the operation haven\u2019t been disclosed and his office hasn\u2019t been asked to assist.<\/p>\n<p>Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin declined to comment, saying, \u201cEvery day, DHS enforces the laws of the nation across the country. We do not discuss future or potential operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a> has defended sending the military and immigration agents into Democratic-run cities like <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/immigration-agents-child-arrest-los-angeles-home-depot-2681d62ec00efb09ebe76c47ecedf6c0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles<\/a>, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/chicago-arrests-immigration-judge-07b0c0ec90495141e4c9a0ccc5deccab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chicago<\/a> and even the nation\u2019s capital, saying the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-national-guard-legal-clash-presidential-power-1ed22e89bcdebc8d3e5bd9238373dc45\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unprecedented operations<\/a> are needed to fight crime and carry out his mass deportation agenda. <\/p>\n<p>Charlotte is another such Democratic stronghold. A statement of solidarity from several local and state officials estimated the city is home to more than 150,000 foreign-born people. A man with a lengthy criminal record has been charged with murder.<\/p>\n<p>Activists, faith leaders, and local and state officials say they already started preparing the immigrant community for a crackdown, sharing information about resources and attempting to calm fears. Nearly 500 people participated in a call organized by the group CharlotteEAST on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe purpose of this call was to create a mutual aid network,\u201d said City Councilmember-Elect JD Mazuera Arias. CharlotteEAST executive director Greg Asciutto urged residents to connect with groups providing support. <\/p>\n<p>The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has clarified that it \u201chas no authority to enforce federal immigration laws,\u201d and is not involved in planning or carrying out these operations. <\/p>\n<p>Mazuera Arias and others said they had already begun receiving unconfirmed reports of what appeared to be plainclothes officers in neighborhoods and on transit. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is some of the chaos that we also saw in Chicago,\u201d state Sen. Caleb Theodros, who represents Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, said Thursday. <\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bovino-border-patrol-immigration-los-angeles-chicago-03b908a84106fae80a80b2837625eef7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gregory Bovino<\/a>, the Border Patrol chief who led Customs and Border Protection\u2019s recent Chicago operation and was central to the immigration operation in Los Angeles, had been coy about where agents would target next.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration\u2019s \u201c <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/immigration-chicago-trump-arrests-dd9c7e57fe829665d722c6755dcafd09\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Operation Midway Blitz<\/a> \u201d began in the Chicago area in early September, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/chicago-violence-crime-pritzker-national-guard-trump-2023e25445c45a3f0f4d3513e8eb2ac4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over the objections<\/a> of local leaders. It initially involved limited arrests by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in the suburbs but expanded to include hundreds of Customs and Border Protection agents. <\/p>\n<p>Their tactics grew <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/chicago-immigration-federal-arrests-helicopter-trump-ice-8dbf688f78f3b6d1b8fdb989557b28c4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increasingly aggressive<\/a>. More than 3,200 people suspected of violating immigration laws have been arrested across the region. <\/p>\n<p>The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees both immigration agencies, has offered few details on the arrests beyond highlighting a handful of people who were living in the U.S. without legal permission and had criminal records.<\/p>\n<p>The group Indivisible Charlotte and the Carolina Migrant Network will train volunteers Friday on what rights people have when interacting with immigration authorities and how to spot federal immigration agents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re not always wearing vests that say \u2018ICE,\u2019\u201d said Tony Siracusa, spokesperson for Indivisible Charlotte. <\/p>\n<p>The groups will also discuss potential \u201cpop up protests,\u201d but he stressed that the activists weren\u2019t encouraging people to go get arrested.<\/p>\n<p>Siracusa said locals are \u201cnot freaking out, but very definitely concerned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniela Andrade, communications director at the Carolina Migrant Network, noted that organizers canceled a Hispanic heritage festival this year out of concerns about immigration enforcement. The group had been holding in-person \u201cknow your rights\u201d sessions for immigrants since the beginning of the year but switched to virtual events even before Thursday\u2019s news.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the concern of family separation, of being removed from a community where many people have lived here for years,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>___<\/p>\n<p>Breed reported from Wake Forest, North Carolina.
