It\u2019s tense up there,\u201d Benjie Ross, who played under Beam at Oakland Skyline High School during the 1980s, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/bayarea\/article\/laney-college-shooting-lockdown-21171682.php?taid=69168a995f9f89000169e410&amp;utm_campaign=trueanthem%2B3988&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told the San Francisco Chronicle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>John Beam\u2019s exact condition is currently unknown. Courtesy of Netflix<\/p>\n<p>In an earlier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ktvu.com\/news\/reports-oakland-laney-college-shooting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement to KTVU<\/a>, Laney officials withheld Beam\u2019s name, saying that the shooting victim was a senior member in the athletic department, but confirmed the victim had been taken to a nearby hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA senior member of our athletic staff was shot on campus in the Laney Field House,\u201d the junior college said, according to KTVU. \u201cThe individual was immediately transported to a local hospital, and we are keeping them \u2014 and their loved ones \u2014 in our hearts during this incredibly difficult time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOut of respect for their privacy, we are not releasing their name at this moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Local authorities confirmed that the suspect is still at large, with Oakland Police Department Assistant Chief James Beere asking for the community\u2019s help in locating the suspected shooter.<\/p>\n<p>The shooting occurred on the college\u2019s campus in Oakland. AP<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a male; unknown race, wearing all dark clothing and a black hoodie,\u201d Beere said.<\/p>\n<p>Beam is a longtime coach in the Bay Area, starting his career at the high school level in 1982 as the defensive coordinator at Skyline.<\/p>\n<p>After more than two decades at Skyline, Beam became the running backs coach for Laney in 2004 and was later named head coach in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of his career, Beam has coached more than 20 NFL players, seven of whom have played in the Super Bowl.<\/p>\n<p>Beere asked for the community\u2019s help locating the suspected shooter.
