{"id":377658,"date":"2025-11-14T06:01:14","date_gmt":"2025-11-14T06:01:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/377658\/"},"modified":"2025-11-14T06:01:14","modified_gmt":"2025-11-14T06:01:14","slug":"scientists-trace-lupus-to-one-of-the-worlds-most-common-viruses-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/377658\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientists Trace Lupus to One of The World&#8217;s Most Common Viruses : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the world&#8217;s most common viral infections could underlie virtually every case of lupus, according to a recent study providing the strongest evidence yet for a link.<\/p>\n<p>The research, led by scientists at Stanford University, has found that the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Epstein%E2%80%93Barr_virus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Epstein-Barr virus<\/a> (EBV) could be the trigger behind the &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lupus.org\/understanding-lupus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cruel mystery<\/a>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<p>EBV is the pathogen that causes &#8216;kissing disease&#8217; (or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/mononucleosis\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20350328\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mononucleosis<\/a>), and according to the new findings, it can directly infect and reprogram specific immune cells, potentially driving the onset of the chronic autoimmune disease <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/root-cause-of-lupus-found-in-a-tug-of-war-over-a-critical-white-cell\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">systemic lupus erythematosus<\/a> \u2013 better known as simply lupus.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the single most impactful finding to emerge from my lab in my entire career,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/news\/all-news\/2025\/11\/lupus-epstein-barr.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">claims<\/a> immunologist and head of the lab William Robinson.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We think it applies to 100 percent of lupus cases.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/lupus-tracked-to-changes-in-a-single-gene-that-tames-the-immune-system\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lupus Tracked to Changes in a Single Gene That Tames The Immune System<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The vast majority of adults in the world have been exposed to EBV at some point in their lives, with the  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/virus\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73053\" data-postid=\"181302\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">virus<\/a> causing little to no fuss as it lies latent in their body&#8217;s cells.<\/p>\n<p>Those with lupus, however, show a deeper infection, possibly because they acquired a more virulent EBV strain. Among patients with the autoimmune condition, researchers found the percentage of B cells infected with EBV is about 1 in 400. That&#8217;s 25 times higher than in healthy individuals.<\/p>\n<p>In the lab, the infection flicked a switch in B cells, activating a system that &#8216;turns on&#8217; their pro-inflammatory genes.<\/p>\n<p>This has the potential, &#8220;to promote systemic disease\u2013driving autoimmune responses,&#8221; the authors <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/scitranslmed.ady0210\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">argue<\/a>, led by immunologist Shady Younis from Stanford.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/EBVBcell-642x393.png\" alt=\"EBV B cell\" width=\"642\" height=\"393\" class=\"wp-image-181325 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>EBV sequencing enabled identification of EBV-infected B cells in the blood of those with and without lupus. Med., 2025)<\/p>\n<p>The discovery could help solve the long-standing mystery of what triggers lupus in the first place and why its symptoms go through seemingly random cycles of flaring and settling.<\/p>\n<p>Lupus causes the immune system to mistakenly attack the body&#8217;s own healthy tissues, causing widespread inflammation throughout the body with potentially severe, life-threatening outcomes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/health-newsletter-subscribe-promo-final-642x337.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"337\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-181305\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The disease was first mentioned in historical records <a href=\"https:\/\/lupus.bmj.com\/content\/7\/Suppl_1\/A3.1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">way back in 850 CE<\/a>, and yet to this day, there is no known cause or cure. Only in the 19th century did experts officially recognize and describe lupus, which can cause a rash resembling a wolf&#8217;s bite (hence the historical Latin name).<\/p>\n<p>The enduring mystery of lupus is often pinned down to its complex nature, possibly triggered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lupus.org\/resources\/what-causes-lupus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">numerous interacting factors<\/a>, such as nutrient deficiencies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newly-identified-lupus-causing-gene-provides-a-potential-target-for-better-treatments\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">genetics<\/a>, hormonal issues, or infections.<\/p>\n<p>The new research from Stanford suggests there really may be a unifying explanation \u2013 one with viral origins.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-discover-a-viral-cause-of-one-of-the-most-common-cancers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scientists Discover a Viral Cause of One of The Most Common Cancers<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For years now, researchers have suspected that EBV is linked to lupus. The virus is known to infect B cells, and B-cell activity is known to be imbalanced in those with lupus. The trouble is, EBV is hard to measure when it infects and hides out in B cells.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers at Stanford devised a clever way to find which of these white blood cells are infected with the virus. Using their new sequencing technique, the team demonstrated that people with lupus have significantly more EBV-infected B cells than those without lupus, especially <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Memory_B_cell\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">memory B cells<\/a>, which enable rapid immune responses.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2025\/11\/c3ac86_4df5d2c487ff47018651757e5a5cb8ebmv2-642x642.avif\" alt=\"Memory B Cells Comic\" width=\"642\" height=\"642\" class=\"wp-image-181324 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Memory B cells &#8216;remember&#8217; specific pathogens so they can launch quick immune responses. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.synscicommics.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Synscicomics<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Of all the hundreds of billions of B cells in a healthy human body, only about 20 percent are &#8216;autoreactive&#8217;, or primed to produce  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/antibody\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73081\" data-postid=\"181302\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">antibodies<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/root-cause-of-lupus-found-in-a-tug-of-war-over-a-critical-white-cell\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">activate killer immune cells<\/a>.&#8217; But when EBV infects latent B cells, it appears to flip them back into a pro-inflammatory state.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our findings provide a mechanistic basis for why only a small fraction of EBV-infected individuals develop SLE,&#8221; the authors <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/scitranslmed.ady0210\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">conclude<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The mechanism is supported by a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/lupus-patients-go-into-remission-in-spectacular-immunotherapy-trial\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">immunotherapy<\/a> for lupus, which hunts down and replaces faulty B cells.
