SAN ANTONIO<\/strong> \u2013 Residents on Da Foste Avenue gathered Thursday to address speeding in the neighborhood, two days after a 70-year-old woman was hit and killed by a driver while sitting on her front porch<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Janice Walker, 70, was known to sit on the front porch with her mom and speak to the neighbors, Armond Hathaway said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey sit out on the porch almost every evening, smoke cigarettes and drink Dr. Pepper and laugh and be friendly,\u201d Hathaway said. \u201cI usually walk on the trail, and they usually greet me when I go and greet me back.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, on Tuesday evening, a driver rounded the corner on Da Foste Ave and hit and killed Walker while she was on her porch.<\/p>\n

The San Antonio Police Department is investigating, but the driver left the scene before police arrived.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m gonna miss her,\u201d Hathaway said.<\/p>\n

The neighborhood association meets every second Tuesday evening, but this week \u2014 because of Veterans Day \u2014 the meeting was held on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Neighbors added speeding to the meeting agenda to address reckless drivers in their neighborhood.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a shame that a tragedy would have to happen for us to get more involved in looking at and doing another traffic study,\u201d Hathaway said. \u201cBut we\u2019ve already filled out the application for another traffic to do Da Foste.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several of the neighbors hope to get speed bumps placed on Da Foste Avenue. However, it\u2019s not the only road in the neighborhood experiencing speedy drivers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been having speeding problems on Honey and Gay (boulevards) late at night,\u201d neighbor Renee Davis said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we had was people going up and down two streets, major streets, very quickly,\u201d Ken Lowe said. \u201cSo, what we did, we requested that the city put speed bumps in.\u201d<\/p>\n

After fighting for it for more than a year, according to Lowe, speed bumps were installed on Honey Boulevard about three or four months ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis happened at 11 o\u2019clock at night,\u201d neighbor Renee Watson said. \u201cI\u2019d be very interested in \u2018were the street lights on?\u2019, \u2018were the tennis court\u2019s lights on?\u2019, so you can see there\u2019s a house there,\u201d Watson questioned.<\/p>\n
