{"id":377797,"date":"2025-11-14T07:24:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-14T07:24:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/377797\/"},"modified":"2025-11-14T07:24:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-14T07:24:10","slug":"south-africa-lets-153-palestinians-disembark-following-12-hour-plane-ordeal-israel-palestine-conflict-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/377797\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa lets 153 Palestinians disembark following 12-hour plane ordeal | Israel-Palestine conflict News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">Chartered plane carrying group of Palestinian passengers was second to land in South Africa in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa has allowed more than 150 Palestinian airline passengers to disembark, after they were kept on a plane for almost 12 hours by the country\u2019s border police, authorities said.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa\u2019s Ministry of Home Affairs authorised the passengers to get off the plane on Thursday night after a local humanitarian organisation guaranteed to provide the passengers with accommodation during their stay in South Africa if needed.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven that Palestinians are eligible for 90-day visa-exempt travel to South Africa, they have been processed as per normal and will be required to adhere to all conditions of entry,\u201d South Africa\u2019s Border Management Authority (BMA) said in a statement late on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The chartered plane carrying 153 Palestinians landed shortly after 8am (06:00 GMT) on Thursday morning at OR Tambo International Airport, which serves the cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria.<\/p>\n<p>According to the BMA, the Palestinian passengers were not allowed to disembark from the aircraft after it was discovered they \u201cdid not have the customary departure stamps in their passports\u201d. The passengers also did not indicate how long they intended to stay in South Africa or the address of their accommodation, the BMA said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollowing their failure to pass the immigration test and given that none of the travellers expressed an intention to apply for asylum, they were initially denied entry,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p>News that the Palestinians were forced to wait on the tarmac at the airport for hours reportedly caused outrage among the public in South Africa, which is a strong supporter of the Palestinian cause and has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/10\/17\/will-gaza-ceasefire-change-south-africas-icj-genocide-case-against-israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">led the charge<\/a> at the International Criminal Court to prosecute Israel for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/10\/14\/south-africa-says-icj-genocide-case-will-continue-despite-gaza-ceasefire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">perpetrating genocide in Gaza.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"zxx\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/2YEQG4W0Kh\">pic.twitter.com\/2YEQG4W0Kh<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Border Management Authority SA (@TheBMA_SA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheBMA_SA\/status\/1989077758748790986?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">November 13, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The order to finally allow the Palestinian passengers to leave the plane came after the country\u2019s Home Affairs Ministry received a commitment from a humanitarian aid organisation \u2013 Gift of the Givers \u2013 to accommodate the visitors during their stay.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 130 Palestinians subsequently entered the country, while 23 transferred from South Africa to other destinations, from the airport, according to the BMA.<\/p>\n<p>The AFP news agency said the plane was a charter flight operated by South African airline Global Airways and had travelled from Kenya.<\/p>\n<p>Founder of Gift of the Givers, Imtiaz Sooliman, told public broadcaster SABC that he did not know who had chartered the aircraft and that a first plane carrying 176 Palestinians had landed in Johannesburg on October 28, with some of the passengers departing for other countries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe families of this first group told us yesterday their family members are coming on a second plane, and nobody knew about that plane,\u201d Sooliman said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose people are really distraught coming from two years of genocide,\u201d Sooliman said of the passengers.<\/p>\n<p>Based on \u201cfeedback\u201d from those who have arrived already in South Africa, Sooliman said Israel appears to be \u201cremoving people from Gaza \u2026 and sending them on chartered planes\u201d without stamping their passports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIsrael deliberately did not stamp the passports of these poor people to exacerbate their suffering in a foreign country,\u201d he added in a post on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Other humanitarian groups are also now offering to provide support for the Palestinian visitors, he added.<\/p>\n<p>Nigel Branken, a South African social worker who assisted those held on the plane, said the passengers from Gaza had told him of being ordered by Israeli authorities to leave all their belongings behind before boarding an unmarked plane at an Israeli air force base.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery clearly all the marks of Israel involved in this operation to take people\u2026to displace them,\u201d Branken told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BREAKING NEWS | About 160 Palestinian refugees have landed at OR Tambo International Airport this morning.
