{"id":377829,"date":"2025-11-14T07:41:23","date_gmt":"2025-11-14T07:41:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/377829\/"},"modified":"2025-11-14T07:41:23","modified_gmt":"2025-11-14T07:41:23","slug":"3-convicted-in-large-scale-fraudulent-bail-bond-investigation-in-houston","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/377829\/","title":{"rendered":"3 convicted in large-scale fraudulent bail bond investigation in Houston"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Three Houston residents have been found guilty of participating in a scheme to fraudulently secure the release of Harris County inmates using falsified bail bond documents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Wednesday, federal prosecutors announced the convictions of Kamaiga Gholar, 31, James Bateson, 46, and Katherine O\u2019Brien, 26, of conspiracy and wire fraud following a week-long bench trial. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The ruling was issued last month on Oct. 15, but the formal announcement was delayed due to the federal government shutdown that was in place at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The three were among those arrested in a large-scale operation targeting the scheme that led to dozens of arrests.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 kDvXdO font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\"\/><\/ul>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Prosecutors said Gholar, Bateson and O\u2019Brien conspired between Sept. 2020 and Jan. 2022 to manipulate Harris County\u2019s bail bond system. They did this by submitting falsified pay stubs to help inmates qualify for bonds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Many of the inmates the group attempted to bail out of custody faced serious charges, including aggravated assault, firearms offenses, drug trafficking and promoting prostitution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThis fraudulent scheme attacked the integrity of the bail bond system,\u201d U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Defense attorneys argued that because the defendants should not be found guilty because their motives in committing the fraud were not financial. The court disagreed, and all three were found guilty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 31. All three were allowed to remain on bond until that hearing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Each defendant faces up to 20 years in federal prison per count and a possible fine of up to $250,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">A total of 53 individuals have been charged, and 26 have now been convicted.<\/p>\n<p><b>Evidence against each defendant<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">During the trial, the judge reviewed recorded jail calls and heard testimony from company representatives across the country. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The company officials confirmed that people listed as bond co-signers were never their employees, despite contradicting paperwork that was fraudulently submitted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><b>MORE ON THE SCHEME: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.click2houston.com\/news\/local\/2024\/07\/25\/53-indicted-in-bail-bond-scheme-involving-violent-offenders-in-harris-county-heres-how-it-worked\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.click2houston.com\/news\/local\/2024\/07\/25\/53-indicted-in-bail-bond-scheme-involving-violent-offenders-in-harris-county-heres-how-it-worked\/\"><b>53 indicted in bail bond scheme involving violent offenders in Harris County: Here\u2019s how it worked<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Evidence presented during the trials included Gholar\u2019s admission that she knowingly emailed fraudulent pay stubs to facilitate an inmate\u2019s release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Bateson was linked to a bond he co-signed for an inmate he knew only as his friend\u2019s roommate. Prosecutors alleged that Bateson fabricated the roommate\u2019s employment information to help bail him out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Investigators also outlined O\u2019Brien\u2019s role in creating false documents, including five hand-written co-signer applications for one inmate.
