{"id":378202,"date":"2025-11-14T11:31:13","date_gmt":"2025-11-14T11:31:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/378202\/"},"modified":"2025-11-14T11:31:13","modified_gmt":"2025-11-14T11:31:13","slug":"florida-adopts-conservative-phoenix-declaration-for-all-of-its-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/378202\/","title":{"rendered":"Florida adopts conservative \u2018Phoenix Declaration\u2019 for all of its schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>TALLAHASSEE, Fla.<\/strong> \u2013 On Thursday, Florida\u2019s Board of Education adopted a new set of principles as part of a so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/phoenix-declaration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/phoenix-declaration\">Phoenix Declaration<\/a>,\u201d becoming the first state in the nation to do so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fldoe.org\/newsroom\/latest-news\/florida-becomes-the-first-state-in-the-nation-to-adopt-the-phoenix-declaration.stml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.fldoe.org\/newsroom\/latest-news\/florida-becomes-the-first-state-in-the-nation-to-adopt-the-phoenix-declaration.stml\">In a release<\/a>, FDOE officials said that the declaration \u2014 which comes courtesy of the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank \u2014 will serve as a guiding set of principles for education in the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThroughout Gov. Ron DeSantis\u2019 tenure, education in Florida has been guided by many of the principles embodied in the Phoenix Declaration,\u201d Education Commissioner Anastasios Kamoutsas said. \u201cBy formally adopting this declaration, we are reaffirming our commitment to an education system that pursues truth and virtue, empowers parents, and always prioritizes our students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The Heritage Foundation itself says that the principles laid out in the declaration are intended to imbue students with \u201cpersonal and civic virtues\u201d to help them succeed and be better members of their communities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The FDOE lists out the new guiding principles as follows:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 kDvXdO font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p><b>Parental Choice and Responsibility <\/b>\u2014<b> <\/b>Parents are the primary educators of their children. Public education funds should always follow the child.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p><b>Transparency and Accountability <\/b>\u2014<b> <\/b>Schools must be fully transparent with parents about curricula, policies, and student well-being.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p><b>Truth and Goodness <\/b>\u2014 Students deserve an education grounded in objective truth, free from ideological fads, and oriented toward the pursuit of the good.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p><b>Cultural Transmission <\/b>\u2014 Students should learn about America\u2019s founding principles and roots in the broader Western and Judeo-Christian traditions. Students should study the best-competing viewpoints that comprise our intellectual heritage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p><b>Character Formation <\/b>\u2014 Schools must prepare children for the challenges and responsibilities of adulthood by cultivating virtue, personal responsibility, and self-discipline.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p><b>Academic Excellence <\/b>\u2014 Schools should prioritize proven teaching methods and a content rich curriculum rooted in foundational subjects over fads or experimental teaching methods.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p><b>Citizenship <\/b>\u2014 Schools should teach students the civic virtues and knowledge necessary for self-government, including the value of civil disagreement.
