Queensland woman Toyah Cordingley’s mobile phone connected with cell towers on an apparent journey away from the beach where she was found dead, a court has heard.<\/p>\n

The 24-year-old’s body was found buried beneath the sand at Wangetti, north of Cairns, the morning after she had gone to walk her dog on the afternoon of October 21, 2018.<\/p>\n

Former Innisfail nurse Rajwinder Singh, 41, has pleaded not guilty to her murder.<\/p>\n

The court has heard investigators used Telstra records to plot the movements of Ms Cordingley’s phone on the day of her death.<\/p>\n

It appeared within range of the Wangetti area just after 2pm, when it connected to distant cell towers in Port Douglas, 28km away.<\/p>\n

Ms Cordingley only sent one text message that afternoon, which was to her boyfriend Marco Heidenreich at 3:17pm.<\/p>\n

Call charge records indicated her phone was connected to a Wangetti phone cell at the time, the court heard.<\/p>\n

However, Ms Cordingley’s phone would later make the first of its final three connections with phone towers closer to Cairns.<\/p>\n

The phone pinged towers at Buchan Point, Saddle Mountain and Smithfield South respectively between 4:51pm and 5:17pm, the court heard.<\/p>\n

Mark Borg, a security data analyst from Telstra, said there were no more connections after that time, indicating Ms Cordingley’s phone was probably switched off.<\/p>\n

Phone data compared with car movements<\/p>\n

The Crown alleges Mr Singh took Ms Cordingley’s phone and other possessions after killing her at the beach, and that on his way home, he drove near “bodies of water” where he would have had opportunities to dispose of them.<\/p>\n

A jury has today been shown photos of Toyah Cordingley’s partner Marco Heidenreich’s activities on the afternoon she died.<\/p>\n

The jury was shown maps of the area where Ms Cordingley’s phone would have been within range of the Smithfield South tower at 5.17pm, and nearby traffic cameras where a blue car was seen driving toward Lake Placid around the same time.<\/p>\n

The court has heard Mr Singh owned a blue Alfa Romeo which came to the police’s attention during the investigation.<\/p>\n

Police initially looked at more than 200 cars in the area, which was then narrowed down to 70, the court heard.<\/p>\n

“We only plotted the Alfa Romeo [on the maps] because that was the only one that matched the data,” homicide investigator Adam Riley said under cross-examination from defence barrister Kate Juhasz.<\/p>\n

The court heard a measure called “timing advance” could be used to give a phone’s “approximate distance from those cell towers”.<\/p>\n

Mr Borg said Telstra used timing advance to calculate how long it took a signal to travel from a cell tower to a phone handset, measured in bands of 78 metres.<\/p>\n

Phone records also showed which antenna a handset connected to, indicating its approximate direction in relation to the tower.<\/p>\n

Police sought other records<\/p>\n

Mr Riley told the court police obtained “a large dataset of phone records” in the investigation.<\/p>\n

Cell records of two other men, Evan McCrea and Remy Fry, were also displayed in court.<\/p>\n

The court has previously heard Mr McCrea was known to hunt wild pigs in the Wangetti area, while Mr Fry had family connections there.<\/p>\n

Mr McCrea’s phone was connected to towers at Smithfield South and Stratford for much of the day, the court heard, and Mr Borg said the records indicated it was being used to access the internet.<\/p>\n

“It looks like, on face value, the phone wasn’t moving,” Mr Borg said.<\/p>\n

It later connected to a tower at Smithfield Heights.<\/p>\n

Mr Fry’s phone connected to the Wangetti tower at 4:33pm and Saddle Mountain at 5:12pm.<\/p>\n

Twelve minutes later, Mr Fry’s phone connected to a tower in Kuranda.<\/p>\n

There was no timing advance data presented to the court for the phone of Ms Cordingley’s boyfriend Marco Heidenreich.<\/p>\n

The court has previously heard Mr Heidenreich was hiking with a friend near Port Douglas that afternoon.<\/p>\n

“We didn’t map Marco Heidenreich, no,” Mr Riley told the court.<\/p>\n
