We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 cglitp\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/music\/reviews\/lady-gaga-review-o2-arena-mayhem-ball-london-b2836270.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lady Gaga<\/a> has opened up about a mental health crisis she experienced after filming the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/films\/reviews\/a-star-is-born-review-cast-lady-gaga-bradley-cooper-songs-shallow-a8513311.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2018 musical drama A Star Is Born.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The pop superstar, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, acted in the film as well as performing songs including the Oscar-winning \u201cShallow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The production came at a particularly busy and stressful time during her career, shortly after she performed the Super Bowl halftime show in February 2017.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/lady-gaga-mayhem-tour-grammys-cover-story-interview-1235460150\/\">Rolling Stone<\/a>, Gaga reveals that during the making of the film, she was taking lithium, a mood disorder medication used to reduce the frequency and severity of manic episodes.<\/p>\n<p>After the film was completed, Gaga embarked on a belated tour in support of her 2016 album Joanne. One night, she experienced what the publication says she described as a \u201cpsychotic break.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was one day that my sister said to me, \u2018I don\u2019t see my sister anymore,\u2019\u201d says Gaga. \u201cAnd I canceled the tour. There was one day I went to the hospital for psychiatric care. It was really scary. There was a time where I didn\u2019t think I could get better&#8230; I feel really lucky to be alive. I know that might sound dramatic, but we know how this can go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In February 2018, when Gaga canceled the last ten dates of her Joanne world tour, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/music\/news\/lady-gaga-canceled-tour-dates-pain-london-birmingham-manchester-berlin-europe-world-a8192536.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">she wrote on Twitter that she was suffering from \u201csevere pain\u201d that had left her unable to continue performing.<\/a> At the time, it was reported that this pain was related to her fibromyalgia, a long-term condition that causes pain across the body.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so devastated I don\u2019t know how to describe it,\u201d Gaga wrote in 2018. \u201cAll I know is that if I don\u2019t do this, I am not standing by the words or meaning of my music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the new interview, Gaga goes on to say that she now considers herself \u201ca healthy, whole person,\u201d crediting her recovery in part to the support of her fianc\u00e9, Michael Polansky.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing in love with someone that cares about the real me made a very big difference,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n<p>She adds that the experience fed into the creation of her 2025 album Mayhem, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/music\/news\/grammy-nominations-2026-announcement-b2860152.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">which was recently nominated for seven Grammys<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cIt was months and months and months of rediscovering everything that I\u2019d lost,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd I honestly think that\u2019s why it\u2019s called Mayhem.
