JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 For many experiencing homelessness, like Dave MacDuffie, it\u2019s a trying and unsettling experience.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s good people out here, and there\u2019s people that… you don\u2019t never know what you\u2019re gonna wake up to,\u201d MacDuffie told Action News Jax on Friday.<\/p>\n
That often nerve-wracking uncertainty makes the need for mental health resources at shelters like Sulzbacher even more important. Those resources can often also provide a chance at long-lasting rehabilitation.<\/p>\n
>>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <\/b><\/a><\/p>\n The National Institute of Health estimates two thirds of the homeless population may experience some kind of mental health disorder<\/a>, often making reentry into society an uphill battle.<\/p>\n \u201cA lot of the folks we do encounter, particularly those who have been on the streets for a long time, you know, do have mental health and substance use concerns,\u201d explained Colleen Bell, the president of Sulzbacher\u2019s health division. \u201cA lot of them have cycled in and out of various systems.
