But in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/accursiochef\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Accursio Lota<\/a>\u2019s case, his memories of that beauty are all true.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Growing up in Menfi, a small town on the southwestern coast of Sicily, he ran through artichoke groves, chasing chickens and standing side-by-side with his grandmother at the kitchen table, preserving summer tomatoes and learning how to prepare the red-bellied tuna caught in the nearby Mediterranean Sea. Even before he started working in restaurants as a teenager, he was learning the art that would one day become his life\u2019s work.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s that nostalgia that led him to opening <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doralajolla.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dora<\/a>\u2014every drop of olive oil, every sun-kissed lemon, and every feathery stalk of foraged wild fennel\u2014everything is a reflection of Lota\u2019s past, present, and future.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Margherita-Pizza-KimberlyMotos-83.jpg.webp.webp\" alt=\"Pizza and pasta dishes from new San Diego restaurant Dora from acclaimed chef Accursio Lota in La Jolla\" class=\"wp-image-117542\"   data-mwl-img-id=\"117542\"\/>Photo Credit: Kimberly Motos<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not the first time he\u2019s taken his childhood cuisine and run with it. In 2019, he and his wife and creative partner Corinne Goria opened <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegomagazine.com\/food-drink\/in-a-restaurant-scene-of-bells-and-whistles-cori-pastificio-wins-with-subtle-warmth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cori Trattoria Pastificio<\/a> in North Park. But <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegomagazine.com\/food-drink\/food-news\/group-behind-cori-trattoria-new-restaurant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dora feels much more ambitious<\/a>, both in scale and in homage. His grandmother, the restaurant\u2019s namesake, feels as intertwined in the concept\u2019s inspiration as she does the menu and even the design.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bw.design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bells + Whistles<\/a> (Animae, Campfire, Jeune et Jolie), co-founders Jason St. John and Barbara Rourke worked with Oceanside-based builder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cltvt.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CLTVT<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegomagazine.com\/features\/behind-the-lafayette-hotel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The LaFayette Hotel<\/a>, Kingfisher), along with Goria, to bring Lota\u2019s Southern Italian upbringing to life in <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegomagazine.com\/guides\/san-diego-neighborhood-guide-la-jolla\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La Jolla<\/a>. The 3,800-square-foot space, just across the street from the La Jolla Playhouse, features 2,600 square feet of dining space with an open kitchen and central bar. A 1,200-square-foot patio for al fresco dining was a must\u2014we have a Mediterranean climate, after all\u2014allowing for around 100 guests. Basically, the number of people Nonnas tend to feed in a night, right?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Bucatini-KimberlyMotos-78.jpg.webp.webp\" alt=\"Pasta from new San Diego restaurant Dora from acclaimed chef Accursio Lota in La Jolla\" class=\"wp-image-117544\"   data-mwl-img-id=\"117544\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Southern Italian cuisine is based in simplicity, seasonality, and using the best, freshest, and most <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegomagazine.com\/food-drink\/photo-essay-fields-of-flavor-at-chino-farms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">local ingredients<\/a>\u2014much like San Diego, Lota says. \u201cThere are a few dishes that are a tribute to my grandmother,\u201d he explains, pointing to pastas like ravioli and agnolotti, all of which are made in-house. Ricotta, spinach, and foraged mushrooms might sound simple, but that\u2019s the point. \u201cShe made it whenever I asked her, and it\u2019s unbeatable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Along with chef de cuisine Luis Esteva (Kettner Exchange, Nolita Hall), he also took care to include his take on traditional Sicilian peasant dishes, like polpette alla griglia. \u201cThere\u2019s a meatball mixed with beef, veal, braised onion, and then it\u2019s basically wrapped in citrus leaves and it\u2019s grilled,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of like being in the countryside, and enjoying the outside, sitting on a stone.\u201d He laughs. \u201cI don\u2019t know if it makes sense, but it\u2019s very unique.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/DoraRistorante-KimberlyMotos-107.jpg.webp.webp\" alt=\"Interior of new San Diego restaurant Dora from acclaimed chef Accursio Lota in La Jolla\" class=\"wp-image-117547\"   data-mwl-img-id=\"117547\"\/>Photo Credit: Kimberly Motos<\/p>\n<p>The cavatelli pasta with basil-infused mussels nduja (spicy Calabrian pork sausage), cherry tomatoes, and burnt lemon will be \u201can explosion of flavor,\u201d he promises, but there will also be his versions of quintessential Italian dishes like bucatini with pomodoro sauce.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey unify Italy, but they also divide Italy, because every person is doing [it] differently than the other, and if you talk to someone, they make it better than you, and yours [is] wrong,\u201d Lota laughs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He dives into great detail about why Dora\u2019s pomodoro is going to kick ass, but I\u2019ll just say that it involves a special tomato sauce that\u2019s made using the sun (it\u2019s a whole thing) and it basically doubles the flavor and is finished with a tomato tartar and fresh basil juice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Bolla-Rosa-KimberlyMotos-72.jpg.webp.webp\" alt=\"Wine from new San Diego restaurant Dora from acclaimed chef Accursio Lota in La Jolla\" class=\"wp-image-117545\" style=\"width:527px\"   data-mwl-img-id=\"117545\"\/><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also plenty of Italian and West Coast wines, curated by certified sommelier Federico Cavalleri (Monello, Bencotto, Cori), as well as cocktails from mixologist Mark Young (Born &amp; Raised, Solare), all under the watchful eye of general manager Steve Schwob, a 25-year veteran of the industry who\u2019s worked at <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegomagazine.com\/food-drink\/addison-becomes-san-diegos-first-3-star-michelin-restaurant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Addison by William Bradley<\/a> and Manchester Grand Hyatt, as well as co-founded <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegomagazine.com\/food-drink\/brad-wise-french-brasserie-restaurant-north-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trust Restaurant Group<\/a>, and served as GM at <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegomagazine.com\/listen\/happy-half-hour-podcast\/marisi-chef-cameron-ingle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marisi<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Between them and Lota\u2019s many, many accolades (he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0Tne0XXBXwo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">won the Barilla World Pasta Competition<\/a> in 2017, has served luminaries like Barack Obama and Oprah Winfrey, and been named Best Chef by San Diego Magazine nearly a half dozen times and counting), the team at Dora is as sparkling as the Mediterranean sea of Lota\u2019s childhood.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Mousse-Al-Limone-KimberlyMotos-54.jpg.webp.webp\" alt=\"Dessert dish from new San Diego restaurant Dora from acclaimed chef Accursio Lota in La Jolla\" class=\"wp-image-117546\"   data-mwl-img-id=\"117546\"\/><\/p>\n<p>For theatergoers, Dora will offer a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doralajolla.com\/s\/DORA-Menu-Working-Girl-pre-theater.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pre-theater menu<\/a> specifically designed to pair with the current performance at the La Jolla Playhouse. The three-course menu offers a few choices for each course, with an optional wine pairing and show-inspired cocktail. The current show, <a href=\"https:\/\/lajollaplayhouse.org\/show\/working-girl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Working Girl<\/a>, is a musical scored by Cyndi Lauper, and the cocktail is a bubbly lemon-spiced prickly pear-gin cocktail for $18. It\u2019s a fun way to partner with their neighbor, says Lota, and a way for theatergoers to plan a full night out for themselves.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Lota wants to make sure everyone understands that Dora isn\u2019t just for people going to La Jolla Playhouse. This isn\u2019t just for UCSD students.
