NEW YORK (WBNG) — According to the Governor\u2019s Traffic Safety Committee, or GTSC, 44,545 tickets were issued across New York State during its annual Halloween enforcement period. <\/p>\n
From October 25 through October 31, law enforcement increased patrols and established sobriety checkpoints to deter, identify and arrest impaired drivers.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe know that there is a greater risk of pedestrian crashes, especially those involving children, and crashes involving impaired drivers on Halloween,\u201d said Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner and GTSC Chair Mark J.F. Schroeder. \u201cThese targeted enforcement campaigns are vital in enabling us to keep our roadways as safe as possible for everyone, so the memories we create are happy ones.\u201d<\/p>\n
Of the tickets issued, 8,701 were issued for speeding, 1,726 were issued for distracted driving, and 1,210 were issued for impaired driving, among other violations. <\/p>\n
The statistics show a slight decrease from last year\u2019s total of 46,212 tickets. <\/p>\n
The Halloween impaired driving enforcement campaign is one of several coordinated initiatives sponsored by the GTSC to reduce alcohol and other drug-related traffic crashes.<\/p>\n
