One of the biggest issues has been nighttime visibility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cSo the lighting is a huge issue right there when you\u2019re going onto the highway and coming off the highway at night, you really can\u2019t see,\u201d said resident Randall Jackson.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>&gt;&gt;&gt; STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Others said the lack of essential services, including access to fresh food, has only added to the challenges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a food desert, like grocery stores are being closed, \u201d resident Leola Williams said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">City leaders say change is finally on the way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cToday we are here to celebrate a transformation, an investment one that will reshape this area that is deserving,\u201d said Councilwoman Ju\u2019Coby Pittman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">The King-Soutel Crossing Community Redevelopment Area project totals just over $6 million and focuses on new sidewalks, medians, and frontage upgrades along a 2.2-mile stretch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">The project will roll out in four phases:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Frontage improvements between I\u2013295 and Trout River Boulevard.<\/li>\n<li>New Sidewalks at Corner of MLK and US1<\/li>\n<li>Median Upgrades from Soutel to Trout River Blvd.<\/li>\n<li> New Sidewalks and Crosswalks upgrades<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cThe first one we\u2019re in now is the MLK sidewalk, and the second one, probably within 60 days, will be the north frontage and right behind that will be medians,\u201d explained Frank Anderson, VP of Acon Construction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\"><b>[DOWNLOAD: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/mobile-apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks<\/b><\/a><b>]<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Construction crews said the improvements will make the corridor safer for both drivers and pedestrians. Officials expect installation of new sidewalks at the corner of MLK and US-1 to begin within the next two weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Pittman said the project doesn\u2019t just address safety concerns; it also lays the groundwork for economic growth and improved lighting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cAbsolutely, this is like I said, the first phase is to entice businesses to come along this corridor,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">She hopes future city leaders will continue to build on this investment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cAnd of course, whoever comes after me, we want to make sure that they continue this on. Is the Gateway into Northside into downtown?\u201d Pittman added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Residents said they are optimistic but hope to see even more progress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cBut there are a lot of things that need to go in the north,\u201d Williams said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">There is currently no set timeline for the project\u2019s full completion, but crews are actively working on phase one.
