Department Store building on Main Street, built in 1910, was purchased for over $2 million to serve as the first campus, El Centro, which opened in 1966.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The campus had 4,047 students on opening day, archives show, and by 1968, the college graduated 153 students from that campus. Over the years, El Centro expanded beyond the original downtown campus, adding the Bill J. That\u2019s also when El Centro acquired a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/food\/restaurant-news\/2020\/03\/03\/why-el-centro-colleges-kitchens-could-become-the-center-of-dallas-culinary-culture\/#:~:text=In%20short%2C%20there%20are%20jobs,Ben%20Torres%20\/%20Special%20Contributor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/food\/restaurant-news\/2020\/03\/03\/why-el-centro-colleges-kitchens-could-become-the-center-of-dallas-culinary-culture\/#:~:text=In%20short%2C%20there%20are%20jobs,Ben%20Torres%20\/%20Special%20Contributor\">50,000-square-foot kitchen<\/a> in northwest Dallas for its culinary arts and baking\/pastry programs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">That matters, because the food service industry is one of Texas\u2019 largest private sector employers, with about 1.4 million employees statewide, said Kelsey Erickson Streufert, chief public affairs officer for the Texas Restaurant Association.<\/p>\n<p>Programs offered<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">El Centro is renowned for its nursing, culinary, hospitality and fashion programs, among other disciplines. This happens when institutions have at least 25% undergraduate Hispanic enrollment, and it typically comes with access to federal grants supporting students and workforce development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">At <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallascollege.edu\/grants\/dhsi\/el-centro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallascollege.edu\/grants\/dhsi\/el-centro\/\">El Centro,<\/a> this resulted in students receiving free access to financial literacy workshops, academic tutoring, internship\/apprenticeship opportunities, and success coaches, among other resources. <\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s next<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The expanded 801 Main Street campus location will significantly expand El Centro\u2019s capacity and programming, Lonon said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The reimagined campus is expected to enhance workforce development programs, particularly in financial services and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cWe can do that even more seamlessly\u201d with new space and focus, Lonon said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">This reporting is part of the Future of North Texas, a community-funded journalism initiative supported by the Commit Partnership, Communities Foundation of Texas, The Dallas Foundation, the Dallas Mavericks, the Dallas Regional Chamber, Deedie Rose, Lisa and Charles Siegel, the McCune-Losinger Family Fund, The Meadows Foundation, the Perot Foundation, the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and the University of Texas at Dallas.
