{"id":379524,"date":"2025-11-15T00:32:15","date_gmt":"2025-11-15T00:32:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/379524\/"},"modified":"2025-11-15T00:32:15","modified_gmt":"2025-11-15T00:32:15","slug":"federal-homelessness-cuts-come-amid-perfect-storm-for-la-service-providers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/379524\/","title":{"rendered":"Federal homelessness cuts come amid \u2018perfect storm\u2019 for LA service providers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Los Angeles homeless services providers say new funding shifts from the Trump administration are coming at a time when efforts to lower the number of people experiencing homelessness in the region are already facing difficult cuts.<\/p>\n<p>Under the<br \/>\n    <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/laist.com\/news\/housing-homelessness\/the-trump-administration-plans-major-cuts-to-long-term-housing-for-homelessness\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">changes rolled out this week<\/a><br \/>\n    , federal funding through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development \u2014 known as HUD \u2014 will be shifted away from \u201chousing-first\u201d strategies that aim to get unhoused people into permanent housing and moved toward efforts that will first require participants to undergo drug treatment or seek work.<\/p>\n<p>Rowan Vansleve, president of Hope The Mission, said L.A.\u2019s homeless numbers could spike as current funding runs out and providers await the result of new funding applications. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt could leave the most vulnerable \u2014 like people with disabilities or serious health issues, mental health issues \u2014 left out, which is really scary,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan Smith, president and CEO of the St Joseph Center, said the federal cuts come amid \u201ctectonic\u201d shifts for L.A.\u2019s homeless services system. Funding from<br \/>\n    <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/laist.com\/news\/housing-homelessness\/measure-a-homeless-local-solutions-funding-santa-clarita-torrance-burbank-cuts-fair\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">voter-approved Measure A<\/a><br \/>\n     is replacing previous county funding, and the region\u2019s lead homeless services agency<br \/>\n    <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/laist.com\/news\/housing-homelessness\/la-city-council-considers-lahsa-alternatives\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is being wound down<\/a><br \/>\n     in favor of a new county homelessness department.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a perfect storm of real challenges we&#8217;re seeing,\u201d Smith said. \u201cIncreased need for housing, for mutual aid, for the types of services that we get to do every day, but a lack of resources to make that happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At<br \/>\n    <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/laist.com\/news\/housing-homelessness\/homelessness-la-region-annual-count-2025\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last count<\/a><br \/>\n    , more than 72,000 people are experiencing homelessness across L.A. County.
