Former members whose memberships have been expired for at least 30 days will be able to take advantage of the new price.

Memberships allow riders unlimited “classic” bike rides up to 45 minutes long. Members must still pay to use Divvy e-bikes, albeit at discounted rates.

The discount comes after years of steadily creeping membership costs. When the Divvy program first launched in Chicago in 2013, a membership cost $75. But the price of a membership reached $119 in 2022 and $130.90 by 2023. The $99 price announced this week brings the cost back down to what a Divvy membership ran members nearly a decade ago in 2016.

At the same time, Divvy will take modest price increases on some rides “to account for inflation.” The cost of scooter trips, e-bike trips and traditional bike trips longer than 45 minutes will all increase by one or two cents per minute for members.

In addition to the decrease in membership price, Divvy will remove fees to unlock its bikes for trips that begin in equity priority areas, which span much of the city’s South, West and Northwest sides.

Member bike rides that take 30 to 45 minutes will be capped at the price of a 30-minute ride, and members will be able to choose to operate e-bikes as traditional bikes, at traditional bike pricing — in what Divvy is terming a “low assist mode” — when traditional pedal bikes aren’t available.

That change follows criticism from some Divvy users over the higher costs required to use the program’s e-bikes, which Divvy introduced in 2020. CDOT has previously said it would invest more in traditional pedal bikes.

The city will also add 750 new docking stations downtown, addressing concerns from some riders who say it can be difficult to find a place to park bikes in dense areas. Schroeder said the new docks would add capacity to busy downtown docking stations.

“As part of this process, some of the older downtown Divvy stations will be relocated to other neighborhoods or decommissioned as needed,” Schroeder said in an email.

Lyft is required to pay an annual fee to Chicago in order to operate the Divvy program, Schroeder said. That payment is typically used for mobility-related projects across the city, she said.

This year, the city and Lyft agreed the ride-share company would reduce its annual payment by about $3 million. That money will be used to fund the Divvy program upgrades announced this week.

In a statement, CDOT Commissioner Tom Carney said the changes “will help us close mobility gaps and give more Chicagoans access to sustainable transportation.”

Originally Published: July 3, 2025 at 1:59 PM CDT

[5124
64,960,5404,5386,1818,1370,522
0":"post-38014","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-chicago","8":"tag-business","9":"tag-chicago","10":"tag-cook-county","11":"tag-il","12":"tag-illinois","13":"tag-latest-headlines","14":"tag-transportation
["GET
