If you\u2019re mourning the \u2014 probably \u2014 impending closure of
\n Cole\u2019s downtown<\/a>
\n or one of the other handful of classic Los Angeles eateries we\u2019ve lost in the past few years, you might find camaraderie in a local social club.<\/p>\n

For about a year now, Jake Hook has been hosting monthly meetings of the
\n Diner Preservation Society<\/a>
\n . “Diner” is a loose term for the group.<\/p>\n

At classic joints like Philippe\u2019s and the
\n recently closed Papa Cristo\u2019s<\/a>
\n , attendees talk about their favorite eateries and what they can do to save the ones we\u2019re at risk of losing.<\/p>\n

\u201cDiners are the classic American third space. They are where communities happen. And you can see that by how worked up people get when diners close,\u201d Hook said.<\/p>\n

Take the recent closure of the Pantry downtown.
\n Now it looks as if it will be reopening<\/a>
\n , but Hook said people from across the city showed up in droves before it shuttered.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo much so that the wait on the last day was about seven hours. And I endured all seven hours,\u201d they told LAist.<\/p>\n

A philosophy professor by day, Hook\u2019s enduring love of diners led them to compile
\n a massive list of classic joints in our region<\/a>
\n . And this month, they launched the
\n “Diner Theory” podcast<\/a>
\n , which delves into topics \u201cat the intersection of food and philosophy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hook, 31, said they think younger generations are looking for spaces that feel more human in an increasingly online world. And diners fill that void.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s something that unites people who have lived here from generation to generation to have these experiences in roughly the same way. And I think that\u2019s valuable for forming some kind of citywide identity,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n

Plus, there\u2019s really good, cheap food.<\/p>\n
