It promised modular, upgradeable, and user-repairable laptops where other manufacturers dare not venture or have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/7\/19\/22313742\/alienware-area-51m-lawsuit-gpu-upgrade-arbitration-settlement\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">outright failed<\/a>. And it\u2019s delivered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The 2025 version of the Framework Laptop 16 comes with not only new AMD Ryzen AI CPU options, but also Wi-Fi 7, a more powerful USB-C charger, redesigned cooling, and a new webcam \u2014 all of which are also sold separately, so existing owners can upgrade. But the biggest bump by far is a more powerful user-replaceable graphics card. The modular, removable GPU is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/report\/768083\/framework-actually-did-it-i-upgraded-a-laptops-entire-gpu-in-just-three-minutes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">what separates the Laptop 16 from any other laptop on the market<\/a>. When it announced the Laptop 16, Framework called upgradable graphics the \u201choly grail.\u201d Even after the Laptop 16 launched, the company was at times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/619586\/framework-laptop-16-update-one-key-but-not-done\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cagey about whether it could deliver future upgrades<\/a>. Now it has, in the form of an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070, offering a sizable improvement in graphics performance over the last-gen AMD Radeon card.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/24047424\/framework-laptop-16-review\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The original<\/a> Laptop 16 was hot, loud, and creaky, and frankly, it felt a bit unfinished \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/24185827\/framework-laptop-16-six-months-later-review\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">some of which improved over time<\/a>. Our review unit is a <a href=\"https:\/\/framework.pxf.io\/c\/482924\/1459308\/17284?u=https%3A%2F%2Fframe.work%2Fproducts%2Flaptop16-diy-amd-ai300%2Fconfiguration%2Fnew\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DIY Edition<\/a> with an AMD Ryzen AI 7 350 mainboard, an RTX 5070 graphics module, 16GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD. This configuration with a 240W USB-C charger costs $2,524 before even adding extras like more expansion cards, colorful spacers, an optional number pad, an RGB macro pad, or the standard expansion bay module (in case you want to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/24047424\/framework-laptop-16-review\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">leave the GPU butt at home<\/a> to save weight). The enticing new Ryzen AI 300-series mainboards with included Wi-Fi 7 module and Framework\u2019s revised heatsink design cost <a href=\"https:\/\/framework.pxf.io\/c\/482924\/1459308\/17284?u=https%3A%2F%2Fframe.work%2Fproducts%2Flaptop16-mainboard-amd-ai300%3Fv%3DFRAKKE0007\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$749<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/framework.pxf.io\/c\/482924\/1459308\/17284?u=https%3A%2F%2Fframe.work%2Fproducts%2Flaptop16-mainboard-amd-ai300%3Fv%3DFRAKKE0009\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$1,049<\/a>, while the standalone RTX 5070 graphics module is <a href=\"https:\/\/framework.pxf.io\/c\/482924\/1459308\/17284?u=https%3A%2F%2Fframe.work%2Fproducts%2Flaptop16-graphics-module-nvidia-geforce-rtx-5070\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$699<\/a>, and the new 240W USB-C charger to adequately power them is <a href=\"https:\/\/framework.pxf.io\/c\/482924\/1459308\/17284?u=https%3A%2F%2Fframe.work%2Fproducts%2Fpower-adapter-240w\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$109<\/a>, making this double-chip upgrade $1,557 to $1,857. That\u2019s the price of a whole laptop.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"_1etxtj1e\">1\/4<\/strong>Changing the graphics module is the same process as the first-gen model. Power down and remove the trackpad and keyboard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Other improvements add up further, including a second-gen 1080p webcam (<a href=\"https:\/\/framework.pxf.io\/c\/482924\/1459308\/17284?u=https%3A%2F%2Fframe.work%2Fproducts%2Fwebcam-module%3Fv%3DFRANJB0001\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$39<\/a>), more rigid second-gen top cover lid (<a href=\"https:\/\/framework.pxf.io\/c\/482924\/1459308\/17284?u=https%3A%2F%2Fframe.work%2Fproducts%2F16-top-cover-kit%3Fv%3DFRAKKG0001\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$139<\/a>), and second-gen display (<a href=\"https:\/\/framework.pxf.io\/c\/482924\/1459308\/17284?u=https%3A%2F%2Fframe.work%2Fproducts%2F16-display-kit%3Fv%3DFRAKKM0001\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$279<\/a>). The display hardware is actually the same, but with a firmware update for Nvidia G-Sync instead of the first-gen\u2019s AMD FreeSync support. Unfortunately, if you have a first-gen Framework 16 and want to take full advantage of the new GPU module, you\u2019ll need to spend $279 on a display that\u2019s hardware-identical to the one you already have; you can\u2019t change that firmware yourself. (There\u2019s also a 12-core Ryzen AI 7 370 mainboard option, which I didn\u2019t test. But based on my benchmarks from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/reviews\/649577\/razer-blade-16-2025-rtx-5090-review\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Razer Blade 16<\/a>, its In fully rasterized gaming benchmarks across Black Myth: Wukong and Cyberpunk 2077, the new Laptop 16 yielded about a 36 to 50 percent increase in average frame rates over the original Radeon RX 7700S module. The delta increases further when using Nvidia\u2019s DLSS 4 rendering on the new model compared to the last-gen with AMD\u2019s FSR 3.1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">I was able to play Battlefield 6 at its High graphics preset using the panel\u2019s native 2560 x 1600 resolution and maintain a consistent 80 to 90fps with DLSS 4 set to Quality. Framework redesigned the thermal management system with new heatsinks and fans, and it makes a big difference. I torture tested both old and new models with a looping Black Myth: Wukong benchmark for over 30 minutes. The old Ryzen 9 7940HS averaged 58 degrees Celsius and reached a piping hot 93C; the new AMD Ryzen 7 AI 350 CPU averaged an internal temperature of 50C and peaked at 64C. The new Laptop 16 still gets loud, but it\u2019s noticeably quieter. It wouldn\u2019t be a Framework without swappable expansion cards \u2014 of which the Laptop 16 maintains six, for three customizable ports on each side; you can charge the laptop from any of the rear four. And the keyboard and trackpad are even more flexible than on Framework\u2019s other laptops. You can center them and fill the sides with colorful spacers, or you can put a macropad or number pad either to the left or right, and align the keyboard and trackpad accordingly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The keyboard is available with either white or RGB backlighting, and in a multitude of language options (or with clear keycaps). It\u2019s one of the better notebook keyboards, with a touch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/reviews\/650608\/framework-laptop-13-review-2025-amd-ryzen-ai-300\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Laptop 13<\/a>\u2019s pillowy feel and deep key travel, but with firmer tactile feedback. And it\u2019s fully customizable using QMK. The mechanical trackpad is good, if slightly small for a laptop of this size (especially compared to those on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/24319419\/apple-macbook-pro-m4-max-pro-review-price-specs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">16-inch MacBook Pro<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/reviews\/649577\/razer-blade-16-2025-rtx-5090-review\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Razer Blade 16<\/a>), and having the freedom to left- or right-align is unique.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"_1etxtj1e\">1\/4<\/strong>The spacers have enough of a panel gap to sometimes notice the shiny internal metal shielding catch the light. It\u2019s all such an eyesore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Unfortunately, Framework\u2019s spacer-heavy design is ingenious in theory and infuriating in practice. The components often don\u2019t line up quite right \u2014 you can feel the edges under your wrists \u2014 and it creaks a whole lot. It just doesn\u2019t feel like something that costs two and a half thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Framework included a prototype trackpad with a 3D-printed edge-to-edge surround, and as soon as I tried it I never wanted to go back to those annoying spacers. This one tweak to the Laptop 16\u2019s design made it feel a tiny bit more like using something more well put-together, like an <a href=\"https:\/\/bestbuy.7tiv.net\/c\/482924\/614286\/10014?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bestbuy.com%2Fproduct%2Fasus-rog-zephyrus-g16-16-oled-2-5k-240hz-gaming-laptop-intel-core-ultra-9-32gb-ram-nvidia-geforce-rtx-5070ti-2tb-ssd-platinum-white%2FJJGGLH7QZG\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Asus ROG Zephyrus G16<\/a>. Even though the prototype surround is cheap plastic and the spacers are made of aluminum, I was glad to ditch the frequent creaking. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/FrameworkComputer\/Framework-Laptop-16\/tree\/main\/Touchpad\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">print your own trackpad surround for now<\/a>, but I\u2019d like to see Framework sell a proper all-metal alternative. It\u2019d be foolish to expect a fully user-serviceable laptop to be as sleek and seamless as a MacBook Pro, but I wish it didn\u2019t feel like such an erector set.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"_1etxtj1e\">1\/4<\/strong>The Framework Laptop 16 versus the lighter and more compact Asus ROG Zephyrus G16.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The lack of polish pops up in other areas. The IPS panel is crisp, with a 2560 x 1600 resolution and up to 165Hz refresh rate, just like the original. Its problem is an overly aggressive, erratic auto-brightness: rather than a smooth fade up or down, it increases and decreases in visible steps, like someone secretly hitting the brightness keys for you, trying to guess what you want. I asked Framework if this behavior might be improved, but rep Eric Schumacher gave only a lukewarm statement: \u201cWe\u2019ll continue to do post-launch firmware updates to improve user experience and resolve issues found by customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">And while Framework says the lid is sturdier than before, it\u2019s still not sturdy enough. Closing it carefully from the center is fine, and it\u2019s ever-so-slightly more solid than the first-gen in that spot. But grab a corner and gently pull or push the screen, and it\u2019s flex city. It crashed around six times in the first two days, both while on battery and while plugged in \u2014 and sometimes while waking it up from sleep or when plugging it into power. Framework seems to be improving the stability of the Laptop 16, much like it did after the first one launched, but it might not be out of the woods just yet. I\u2019ll have to keep testing it after further updates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">It\u2019s easy to admire Framework\u2019s commitment to repairability and upgradability, and its overall execution has been solid. The thin and light <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/reviews\/650608\/framework-laptop-13-review-2025-amd-ryzen-ai-300\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Laptop 13<\/a> has slowly been refined into an excellent all-around package, and the company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/reviews\/688959\/framework-laptop-12-review-modular-touchscreen-intel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Laptop 12<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/reviews\/749404\/framework-desktop-pc-amd-ryzen-ai-max-385-395-plus-review\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Desktop<\/a> both came out of the gate strong. I\u2019m hoping the incremental refinements will continue; something like a single-piece metal trackpad surround would go a long way. Because of the price, it\u2019s hard to deny the temptation of non-upgradeable gaming laptops that are thinner and sleeker, such as the ROG Zephyrus G16, or more powerful.
