Eddie Murphy was hurt by David Spade\u2019s jokes at his expense during a December 1995 sketch on \u201cSaturday Night Live,\u201d the comedian reveals in his documentary \u201cBeing Eddie,\u201d which was released on Netflix this week.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like your alma mater taking a shot at you,\u201d Murphy explains in the doc. During a December 9, 1995, sketch, Spade was telling jokes about pop culture news at the time when a photo of Murphy from his box office bomb \u201cVampire in Brooklyn\u201d popped up on screen.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook, children, it\u2019s a falling star. Make a wish,\u201d Spade quipped.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe audience there said \u2018boo,\u2019 and hissed him for saying it,\u201d Murphy says of the moment. \u201cI was hurt. My feelings was hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also elaborates on \u201call of those channels that the joke has to go through\u201d and said, \u201cIf there was a joke like that right now, and it was about some other\u00a0SNL\u00a0cast member, and it was about how f\u2011\u2011ed up their career was, it would get shot down. The producers look at you, \u2018You can\u2019t, you\u2019re not saying that joke.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t like, f\u2011\u2011\u2011 David Spade. I was like, oh, f\u2011\u2011\u2011\u00a0\u2018SNL\u2019. F\u2011\u2011\u2011 y\u2019all. How y\u2019all gonna do this s\u2011\u2011\u2011? That\u2019s what y\u2019all think of me? Oh, you dirty motherf\u2011\u2011\u2011er,\u201d he adds. \u201cAnd that\u2019s why I didn\u2019t go back for years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Murphy eventually returned to the show in 2019, something he described as a \u201cgreat experience. My creative energy, everything had been turned back up to 10.\u201d<\/p>\n
