PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (WPVI) — For the last 15 years, students at La Salle University have supported their younger peers through a 5k race.<\/p>\n

The “Brother Gerry Molyneaux Sig Phive K” raises money for La Salle Academy<\/a>, which supports underserved children in Kensington.<\/p>\n

“15 years ago, myself and Brother Gerry Molyneaux got together and we saw a real opportunity …to offer something more than just what goes on inside the classroom,” said La Salle Alumni, John Schaefer.<\/p>\n

“We have raised over a half a million dollars for La Salle Academy to date… This year we’re already eclipsing last year, which was $60,000, and we expect to do even more than that this year,” he continued.<\/p>\n

La Salle’s “Sigma Phi Lambda” organizes the event with only members of the fraternity, and will also spend time with students at La Salle Academy independently of the race.<\/p>\n

“It’s not just a monetary donation that they provide to the school. They also provide mentoring and are role models for our students,” said President of La Salle Academy, Maria Walker.<\/p>\n

The academy provides a cost-effective alternative for children in Philadelphia to receive a Catholic education.<\/p>\n
