NDP, Premier David Eby received a strong endorsement by New Democrats during the party\u2019s convention this weekend in Victoria.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Just over 82 per cent of the 743 NDP delegates voted against having a leadership race,  effectively accepting the status quo of Eby at the helm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo everyone in this room \u2014 the members who are the beating heart of our movement \u2014 thank you,\u201d Eby said in his speech to the delegates before the voting results were announced. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are also a broad church. I can see that in this room. Labour organizers, Indigenous leaders, farmers, community activists and business people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The convention, however, revealed tensions among the NDP faithful. <\/p>\n<p>Delegates raised concerns about the NDP government\u2019s willingness to fast-track resource projects, its support for public sector unions, and its ability to reach young people.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYoung people have been lost by the NDP,\u201d said J\u00e4ger Rosenberg, who is running for party president. <\/p>\n<p>Rosenberg, who joined the party at age 13, worries that young people who feel frustrated in the face of the affordability crisis are turning to the B.C. Greens, who are newly energized under a new leader, and the B.C. NDP party president (CBC News)<\/p>\n<p>To get them back, he said, the party must offer an \u201calternative to the maple MAGA fascists who are trying to take over this province. We need to be offering a vision and we need to be offering hope.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the first time the party has gathered since last year\u2019s election, which the NDP almost lost to the upstart B.C. Conservatives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Labour tensions<\/p>\n<p>Sussanne Skidmore, president of the B.C. Federation of Labour, acknowledged that the eight-week B.C. General Employees&#8217; Union strike was a difficult time for public sector workers. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government has some work to do in repairing those relationships,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>In his speech, Eby acknowledged the tension between the party and the labour movement\u00a0on the heels of the strike.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t need to tell our friends in the labour movement that we won\u2019t always see eye to eye on everything,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will always defend your right to get a fair deal where they are best achieved: At the bargaining table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NDP government is in the midst of negotiating with the B.C. Nurses&#8217; Union and other public sector unions. <\/p>\n<p>Climate change concern<\/p>\n<p>There was also disagreement among party members about the NDP\u2019s commitment to the environment and climate change. <\/p>\n<p>That bubbled to the surface when debating the future of the forestry industry and a resolution to accelerate the North Coast Transmission line.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Several delegates raised concerns about taxpayer dollars subsidizing the fossil fuel industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The North Coast Transmission line would double the electricity that can flow between Prince George and Terrace and is needed to power LNG projects and critical mineral mines.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jordan Crawford, a delegate who lives in Courtenay, says he\u2019s \u201cpast concerned\u201d when it comes to Eby\u2019s promise to fast-track resource projects.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A man stands in a room\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1763267233_130_default.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.7777777777777777\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Jordan Crawford, an NDP delegate, is concerned about David Eby&#8217;s support for LNG projects and the North Coast Transmission Line (CBC News)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLNG is not a transition fuel. It\u2019s as bad as coal,\u201d Crawford said. \u201cI can\u2019t support this. And I can\u2019t support a leader who\u2019s staking his entire position on this.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Crawford says the NDP under Eby has \u201cabandoned\u201d climate change goals and risks losing support to the B.C. Greens under Emily Lowan, the climate activist who was recently elected party leader.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The North Coast Transmission line is one of two projects that Prime Minister Mark Carney declared a nation-building project.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH | Eby won&#8217;t rule out early election over North Coast Transmission line:<\/strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1763267233_190_default.jpg\"  alt=\"\" class=\"thumbnail\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"video-item-title\">David Eby won&#8217;t rule out early election call if North Coast Transmission Line bill fails<\/p>\n<p> B.C. Premier David Eby said he would not rule out calling an early election if the government&#8217;s bill to fast-track a power line in northern B.C. fails. But as Katie DeRosa reports, the B.C. Conservatives attempted to delay Bill 31, and the B.C. Greens aren&#8217;t fully on board with the bill.<\/p>\n<p>Carney was in Terrace this week to announce that the transmission line and the Ksi Lisims LNG facility are the latest B.C. projects that will be fast-tracked through the major projects office. <\/p>\n<p>Eby last month said he would not rule out calling an early election if the legislation to support the North Coast Transmission line fails in the legislature. <\/p>\n<p>During debate, Eby stood at the microphone, among delegates, and spoke in favour of accelerating the project.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Eby told the crowd there\u2019s an opportunity for the government to seek a public equity stake in some of these major resource projects \u201cso that everybody benefits when we support these companies, not just the private company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He later clarified to media that the government does not intend to seek public equity stakes in Ksi Lisims LNG or LNG Canada and the North Coast Transmission Line will be publicly owned by B.C. Hydro with First Nations along the route obtaining equity stakes.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution to support the transmission line passed with overwhelming support.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The party also focused on election readiness, ensuring the party has a healthy war chest.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Eby says that\u2019s to ensure the party is \u201cready\u201d for an early election if the B.C.
