{"id":382454,"date":"2025-11-16T07:01:21","date_gmt":"2025-11-16T07:01:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/382454\/"},"modified":"2025-11-16T07:01:21","modified_gmt":"2025-11-16T07:01:21","slug":"woman-86-dies-in-queens-nycha-apartment-fire-weeks-fourth-deadly-nyc-blaze","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/382454\/","title":{"rendered":"Woman, 86, dies in Queens NYCHA apartment fire; week&#8217;s fourth deadly NYC blaze"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An 86-year-old woman died as a fire tore through her Queens apartment early Saturday \u2014 the fourth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/11\/14\/man-dies-queens-hoarder-home-blaze\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fire death to rock the city<\/a> in a week, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>The fire erupted in the sixth-floor apartment on 12th St. near 41st Ave. at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/nycha\/downloads\/pdf\/Queensbridge%20South.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NYCHA\u2019s Queensbridge South Houses<\/a>\u00a0just after 2:15 a.m., the FDNY said.<\/p>\n<p>Neighbors woke up to choking smoke and firefighters banging on their doors, shouting at them to evacuate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know how the smoke got in. Maybe the windows,\u201d said Tyrelle Washington, 24, who lived next door to the senior\u2019s apartment. \u201cI couldn\u2019t breathe. I was like, \u2018What\u2019s going on?&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As he exited his apartment, Washington saw the octogenarian, a Dominican woman and longtime tenant who only spoke Spanish, being taken out on a stretcher with extensive burns to her arms and legs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wasn\u2019t moving. Her skin was burned,\u201d Washington said. \u201cI was on edge. I\u2019ve known her since I grew up here. She\u2019s been here quite a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>EMS rushed the woman to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/locations\/queens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mount Sinai Queens<\/a>, where she died a short time later. Her name was not immediately disclosed.<\/p>\n<p>Once everyone was allowed back into their apartments, Washington peered into the senior\u2019s home. (Rebecca White \/ New York Daily News)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was just black in there,\u201d he said. \u201cYou could tell something happened in her apartment. I just can\u2019t fathom this. It just doesn\u2019t make sense to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Residents remembered the senior as a sociable, active woman, who would play cards and bingo with other seniors in a nearby park.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t smoke, she didn\u2019t drink. She used to play bingo with the old ladies in the park in the summer,\u201d remembered one 72-year-old tenant, who only wanted to be identified as Cesar, who appeared moved by her death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy wouldn\u2019t I be sad?\u201d he said solemnly. \u201cShe was a nice lady.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The FDNY put out the flames within a half hour. No other injuries were reported.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s blaze was the fourth fatal fire to occur since Nov. 9, a day after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/11\/09\/fdny-firefighter-patrick-brady-dies-of-medical-episode-while-battling-brooklyn-blaze\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Firefighter Patrick Brady<\/a> died of a heart attack while fighting a blaze atop a Brooklyn apartment building, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>An 88-year-old man died after a fire broke out in his home on Woodycrest Ave. in the Bronx on Sunday evening, officials said. Three days later, on Wednesday afternoon, a 74-year-old woman died at the hospital after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2025\/11\/12\/woman-dies-apartment-fire-upper-east-side\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a fire tore through her Upper East Side apartment<\/a> on E. 81st St. near First Ave.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a white smoke, a ghostly plume pouring out of her door,\u201d a fifth-floor neighbor, 42, of the Upper East Side victim told the Daily News at the time. \u201cI called the super and the Fire Department. It was very sad. It was very traumatic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next day, Robert Germain, 89, succumbed to a fire inside his home on 194th St. near Hollis Court Blvd. in Auburndale, Queens. Firefighters had to battle through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2023\/05\/30\/man-95-dies-of-wounds-from-soho-hoarder-house-fire-son-70-still-clinging-to-life\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2023\/05\/30\/man-95-dies-of-wounds-from-soho-hoarder-house-fire-son-70-still-clinging-to-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201choarder conditions\u201d<\/a> as they fought the blaze.<\/p>\n<p>Germain died at the scene. The senior lived alone and had no children.
