(AP) \u2014 Ford Motor Co.\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ford-motor-headquarters-move-dearborn-d096be65f31ae6f1392fa1cc858759f7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new headquarters<\/a>, the carmaker\u2019s first central office switch since Dwight Eisenhower was president, is double the size of its old one with room for twice as many employees.<\/p>\n<p>The new HQ has seven restaurants as part of a 160,000-square-foot (14,864 square-meter) food hall, office space, design studios and fabrication shops.<\/p>\n<p>And, of course, cars.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201ccrown jewel\u201d of Ford\u2019s headquarters, according to Ford Land\u2019s global design and brand director, is a showroom she likened to a \u201cJames Bond villain\u2019s lair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it is impressive. When you\u2019re in it, you feel like you are in the center of automotive design,\u201d Jennifer Kolstad said this past week, after leading a media tour of the new 2.1 million square-foot (195,096 square-meter) HQ.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIts principal function is decision-making,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s where we showcase our new product, and our executives make decisions about what we will take to market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ford is moving its headquarters for the first time in seven decades, relocating to the newly constructed building 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) away in its longtime home of Dearborn, Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>The new structure is being called \u201cFord World Headquarters.\u201d It is part of a larger campus that will take the name of the current HQ: Henry Ford II World Center. <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/national-national-general-news-b6752b43f4ec4f0da47e0f6c1731297f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Henry Ford II<\/a> was the grandson of company founder <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/edison-ford-winter-estate-florida-ec36c55e65972033cd2e53f6b1bfaed5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Henry Ford<\/a> and the uncle of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ford-le-mans-endurance-racing-ba5dda7b200a9d82b8a84b7828611c1b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bill Ford<\/a>, the automaker\u2019s executive chairman.<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"html-embed-module-a50000\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Stay up to date with the news and the best of AP by following our WhatsApp channel.<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"ap-btn-whatsapp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whatsapp.com\/channel\/0029Va7Tv2j59PwNEyqGCi1y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n      Follow on<br \/>\n      <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761588853_344_\" alt=\"WhatsApp\"\/><br \/>\n    <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ford\u2019s current headquarters, known as \u201cThe Glass House,\u201d opened in 1956, and will be demolished. The 122-year-old company expects to complete its move in 2027. It is not disclosing the cost of the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFord wants a new headquarters building that reflects who they think they are and who they want to be going forward. They don\u2019t want to viewed as the car company from yesterday. They want to be viewed as a car company for tomorrow,\u201d said Erik Gordon, a professor at the University of Michigan\u2019s Ross School of Business. \u201cAnd they need to attract new kinds of employees. They\u2019re competing for software engineers, AI experts. Every company on the planet wants the same people. Those people are used to working in new, very cool offices.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Ford not only is focusing on modern amenities in its new home, it also is prioritizing proximity.<\/p>\n<p>When the new HQ is fully online in two years, it will have more than 14,000 employees within a seven-minute walk and another 9,000 within a nine-minute drive, said Jim Dobleske, Ford Land CEO. <\/p>\n<p>And, unlike The Glass House, where executives are separated from their employees, the new headquarters building is designed to allow for better and more collaboration between teams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(Ford CEO) Jim Farley has said in the past: \u2018When you walk into our existing headquarters building, you\u2019re not quite sure if you\u2019re walking into Ford or if you\u2019re walking into a shampoo company,\u2019\u201d Dobleske said. \u201cThis building, you know you are walking into Ford Motor Company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some workers already have set up shop inside the new headquarters, which is to be the site of a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fromtheroad.ford.com\/us\/en\/articles\/2025\/grand-opening-new-ford-world-headquarters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">grand-opening celebration<\/a> on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/video\/crews-unfurl-massive-american-flag-on-side-of-new-hudsons-building-in-detroit-6ea57456eeef4bc99a7944dbba471456\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General Motors<\/a> also is in the midst of a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/general-motors-dan-gilbert-renaissance-center-redevelopment-3c2ea9d40b17cf58fcb32d1a4c4ee72e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">headquarters move<\/a>, departing its Renaissance Center home in Detroit for a new <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/detroit-hudsons-development-43e6afd9701794982f0639f36c1ed381\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">downtown office building<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gordon, the Michigan business professor, said \u201cboth companies want a new look.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>They \u201cwant to be seen as forward-looking companies of the future &#8212; companies that are good at software and AI and things that they haven\u2019t been known for in the past,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"DEARBORN, Mich.
