Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said President Donald Trump\u2019s promised $2,000 tariff \u201cdividend\u201d would require legislation in Congress, offering a more cautious view of the proposed payments after Trump days ago said they would be distributed \u201cnext year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking to Fox Business\u2019s \u201cSunday Morning Futures,\u201d<\/a> Bessent said \u201cwe will see\u201d when asked if Trump\u2019s proposed tariff dividends would come into fruition, noting that \u201cwe need legislation for that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bessent also said the payments \u201cwould be for working families, we\u2019ll have an income limit,\u201d but did not elaborate on where that limit would be set.<\/p>\n

Trump told reporters Friday aboard Air Force One the $2,000 payments would come \u201csometime next year, during the year,\u201d adding, \u201cwe\u2019ve taken in a lot of money from tariffs. The tariffs allow us to give a dividend.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump <\/a>has repeatedly floated the idea, writing on Truth Social earlier this month, \u201ca dividend of at least $2000 a person (not including high income people!) will be paid to everyone,\u201d claiming the U.S. is able to make the payments because of his various economic achievements. <\/p>\n

Trump made the proposal while bashing opponents of his tariffs as \u201cFOOLS,\u201d days after both liberal and conservative Supreme Court justices cast doubt on his administration\u2019s authority to impose the tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.<\/p>\n

Only Congress is authorized to spend federal dollars, however, and it\u2019s unclear if Trump has the support to send out the money\u2014or in what form the payments would be made.<\/p>\n

Bessent previously suggested the payments \u201ccould come in lots of forms,\u201d including tax cuts that are already part of Trump\u2019s signature policy legislation, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.<\/p>\n

Injecting further uncertainty into the idea\u2014about half of the revenue raised by Trump\u2019s tariffs, $100 billion, is under review by the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n

Trump made a similar proposal with regard to savings his administration claimed were made by cuts implemented by the Department of Government Efficiency. \u201cWe\u2019re considering giving 20% of the DOGE savings to American citizens and 20% to paying down the debt,\u201d he said in February, though checks never came to fruition. <\/p>\n
