The fall was still smaller than the 0.6% drop the market had expected. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">A big decline during the quarter came in exports, which were 1.2% down from the previous quarter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Some businesses had sped up exports, when they could, to beat the tariffs kicking in, inflating some of the earlier data for exports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">On an annualized basis, exports dropped 4.5% in the three months through September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Imports for the third quarter slipped 0.1%. Private consumption edged up 0.1% during the quarter. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Tariffs are a major blow to Japan\u2019s export-reliant economy, led by powerful automakers like <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/toyota-automaker-japan-trump-tariffs-d59cd0e8b278c6ab37c3db709c38de5f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Toyota Motor Corp.<\/a>, although <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nissan-japan-automaker-minth-headquarters-a54772fc876fd74b72714d72b9990a04\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">such manufacturers<\/a> have over the years moved production abroad to avert the blunt of tariffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The U.S. now slaps a 15% tariff on nearly all Japanese imports.
