{"id":384670,"date":"2025-11-17T06:54:18","date_gmt":"2025-11-17T06:54:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/384670\/"},"modified":"2025-11-17T06:54:18","modified_gmt":"2025-11-17T06:54:18","slug":"smuggler-involved-in-deadly-panga-boat-crash-near-del-mar-coast-to-be-sentenced-nbc-7-san-diego","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/384670\/","title":{"rendered":"Smuggler involved in deadly panga boat crash near Del Mar coast to be sentenced \u2013 NBC 7 San Diego"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sergio Rojas-Fregoso, one of five human smugglers connected to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsandiego.com\/news\/local\/multiple-people-dead-several-missing-in-del-mar-panga-boat-incident-officials\/3818520\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsandiego.com\/news\/local\/multiple-people-dead-several-missing-in-del-mar-panga-boat-incident-officials\/3818520\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">panga boat that crashed in Del Mar&#8217;s shore<\/a> back in May of this year, is due in court Monday for sentencing.<\/p>\n<p>The smuggling operation he helped lead led to the death and injuries of multiple migrants.<\/p>\n<p>Court records show that on May 5th, witnesses watched as the panga boat flipped over in the water in Del Mar, just north of Torrey Pines State Beach.<\/p>\n<p>Encinitas Deputy Fire Chief Jorge Sanchez estimated 18 people were aboard the boat when it flipped over in the water.<\/p>\n<p>Four people died and multiple others were hospitalized, but Rojas-Fregoso was able to escape.<\/p>\n<p>The 31-year-old Mexican national and two other people were arrested later that night, while border patrol agents were conducting operations in  Chula Vista. <\/p>\n<p>They found him because he was driving a car that was spotted speeding away from the panga boat crash in Del Mar, earlier that day.<\/p>\n<p>According to the U.S. Attorney&#8217;s Office, during Rojas-Fregoso&#8217;s arrest, border patrol agents found eight migrants missing from the boat in the getaway car.<\/p>\n<p>Rojas-Fregoso&#8217;s sentencing comes on the heels of another panga boat that capsized off the coast of Imperial Beach early this Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Border had watched them cross the border when it capsized,&#8221; Chief John French with Imperial Beach Fire Department said. <\/p>\n<p>U.S. Coast Guard said the boat was carrying at least nine people. <\/p>\n<p>Four of them died, three of them found near the pier, the other just feet away from homes on Seacoast Drive. <\/p>\n<p>Immigration records of the Department of Homeland Security revealed Rojas-Fregoso had previously been deported to Mexico on December 19, 2023.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Sergio Rojas-Fregoso, one of five human smugglers connected to a panga boat that crashed in Del Mar&#8217;s shore&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":384671,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5134],"tags":[5229,1582,276,1035,34835,3549,7264,67,586,132,5230,68,2969],"class_list":{"0":"post-384670","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-san-diego","8":"tag-america","9":"tag-ca","10":"tag-california","11":"tag-crime-and-courts","12":"tag-del-mar","13":"tag-san-diego","14":"tag-sandiego","15":"tag-united-states","16":"tag-united-states-of-america","17":"tag-unitedstates","18":"tag-unitedstatesofamerica","19":"tag-us","20":"tag-usa"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@us\/115563729073719115","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/384670","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=384670"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/384670\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/384671"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=384670"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=384670"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=384670"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
