{"id":385228,"date":"2025-11-17T12:53:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-17T12:53:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/385228\/"},"modified":"2025-11-17T12:53:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-17T12:53:10","slug":"europes-children-and-teenagers-face-growing-mental-health-crisis-who-warns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/385228\/","title":{"rendered":"Europe\u2019s children and teenagers face growing mental health crisis, WHO warns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mental health issues are a growing crisis among Europe\u2019s children and teenagers, according to a new report.<\/p>\n<p>One in seven Europeans under the age of 20 have a mental health condition , an increase of one-third over the past 15 years, according to the analysis from the World Health Organization (WHO).<\/p>\n<p>Girls are disproportionately affected, with one in four girls aged 15 to 19 reporting a mental health condition. <\/p>\n<p>Concerns about young people\u2019s mental health have spiked in recent years, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/health\/2025\/05\/22\/where-in-europe-do-teenagers-have-the-best-and-worst-mental-health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>a report earlier this year<\/strong><\/a>citing social isolation, the COVID-19 pandemic, ongoing geopolitical conflicts, and socioeconomic instability as potential drivers of mental health issues.<\/p>\n<p>That report found that teenagers in the Danish territory of the Faroe Islands, along with Iceland and Denmark, ranked highest for mental wellbeing, while those in Ukraine, Cyprus, and Poland ranked among the lowest. <\/p>\n<p>Across the bloc, access to professional mental health support remains an issue, the WHO report emphasised. About one-quarter of European countries lack community-based mental health services for young people, while one in five have no dedicated mental health policies in place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis report is a wake-up call,\u201d said Dr Jo\u00e3o Breda, who works on patient safety and health care quality at the WHO.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery child and young person has the right to mental health support and high-quality care,\u201d he added in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The report is the first to comprehensively collect data on child and youth mental health across the WHO\u2019s European region, which comprises 53 countries in Europe and Central Asia.<\/p>\n<p>It highlights the urgent need for adequate in-person care, especially at a time when young people are increasingly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/next\/2025\/09\/07\/ai-psychosis-why-are-chatbots-making-people-lose-their-grip-on-reality\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>relying on artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots<\/strong><\/a> such as ChatGPT for emotional support \u2013 sometimes resulting in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/next\/2023\/03\/31\/man-ends-his-life-after-an-ai-chatbot-encouraged-him-to-sacrifice-himself-to-stop-climate-\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>tragic outcomes<\/strong><\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The WHO called for countries to take steps to boost young people\u2019s mental health, including investing in mental health services and redesigning programmes to more effectively meet the needs of children and young people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy acting now, countries can build resilient systems that help the next generations thrive,\u201d Breda said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Mental health issues are a growing crisis among Europe\u2019s children and teenagers, according to a new report.
