Craig Goldman, R-Fort Worth, who serves on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, said he\u2019s confident in President Donald Trump\u2019s administration\u2019s ability to shape federal laws on the energy industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving been up there for almost a year, it really is amazing how we\u2019ve been able to transform policy,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The North Texas lawmaker was joined by dozens of oil and gas producers at the Texas Alliance of Energy Producers annual conference Nov. 11 in Fort Worth.<\/p>\n<p>Goldman criticized energy officials under former President Joe Biden\u2019s administration for vying to advance wind, solar and renewable energy across the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo offense to wind and solar, because obviously on our grid in Texas, we need wind and solar,\u201d Goldman said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He pointed to California\u2019s goal to rely solely on wind and solar energy and other forms of <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/environment\/climate-change\/2024\/08\/california-clean-power-progress-grid\/#:~:text=The%20state%20faces%20a%20huge%20challenge%20in,2030%2C%20ramping%20up%20to%20100%25%20by%202045.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clean electricity by 2045<\/a> as an inefficient milestone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just not going to happen,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since taking office, Trump has vowed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/nation\/heres-what-to-know-about-trumps-executive-actions-on-climate-and-environment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">roll back environmental regulations<\/a> to allow for the expansion of energy production, particularly oil and gas. (Nicole Lopez | Fort Worth Report)<\/p>\n<p>Nuclear power plants face opposition much like oil, natural gas and coal do, Goldman said, but small nuclear reactors are more favored by federal officials.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He described small nuclear reactors, particularly the plant headed by Abilene Christian University, as the future of energy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In August, the U.S. Department of Energy approved the <a href=\"https:\/\/acu.edu\/2025\/08\/28\/doe-taps-acu-natura-to-receive-critical-nuclear-reactor-fuel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">distribution of uranium<\/a> to fuel ACU\u2019s molten salt reactor, one of three nuclear developers to receive the resource. The university\u2019s research reactor acts as the first use of energy company Natura Resources\u2019 1-megawatt thermal molten salt reactor system.<\/p>\n<p>North Texas\u2019 growing population as well as more data centers \u2014 which require between <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/04\/07\/industry-leaders-talk-impact-of-tariffs-data-centers-on-energy-markets-at-tcu-event\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3 to 4 megawatts of electricity<\/a> \u2014 are compounding energy needs.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the region is considered a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/04\/28\/renewed-push-for-nuclear-energy-expansion-sparks-excitement-anxiety-in-north-texas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prospective home<\/a> for small nuclear facilities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In support of nuclear research, Texas lawmakers this year approved $120 million to benefit the partnership between Natura Resources and ACU\u2019s energy-dedicated department, Nuclear Energy eXperimental Testing Laboratory.<\/p>\n<p>The West Texas nuclear project is the only university-led reactor in the country to receive a construction permit from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not here to supply energy in America. (Nicole Lopez | Fort Worth Report)<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Mattie Parker credited oil and gas producers with boosting Fort Worth\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p>The energy industry is the face of Fort Worth\u2019s \u201creally bright future,\u201d said Parker.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The number of companies in the city\u2019s energy industry grew by 34% in the last decade, Parker said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over 6,000 people in the city are employed through energy companies, the mayor said, and Fort Worth officials expect that number to grow.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>North Texas\u2019 success as a regional energy hot spot predates the last decade.<\/p>\n<p>Between 2002 and 2009, Tarrant County experienced an urban boom in natural gas drilling. The <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2024\/08\/25\/cowtown-to-boomtown-barnett-shale-revolution-supercharged-fort-worths-future-until-it-didnt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barnett Shale<\/a> encompasses more than 5,000 square miles of natural gas reserves across 18 counties in North Texas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The natural gas extracted from North Texas land led to the creation of about 115,000 jobs in 2013. About 4,065 permits were issued to energy producers extracting resources from the Barnett Shale.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Parker vowed to keep Fort Worth moving in a business-focused direction.<\/p>\n<p>The city is home to a \u201clitany of things that would not be possible in the state without the energy industry,\u201d the mayor said.<\/p>\n<p>Nicole Lopez is the environment reporter for the Fort Worth Report.
