A New York City police officer was\u00a0shot\u00a0in the face during a\u00a0shootout<\/a>\u00a0with a homicide suspect in Brooklyn on Monday, cops said.<\/p>\n

Officer Sharjeel Waris, 25, was on the scene of a homicide that unfolded earlier in the morning in\u00a0Brownsville<\/a>\u00a0when the alleged shooter opened a door from a first floor apartment and opened fire with a shotgun around 7:45 a.m., police said.<\/p>\n

A New York City police officer was wounded in the face during a shootout with a homicide suspect in Brooklyn on Monday. Citizen<\/p>\n

Waris returned fire and hit the suspect, who then barricaded himself inside of an apartment in the building, located at 1046 Thomas S. Boyland St.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Waris suffered wounds to his face\u00a0\u201cconsistent with bird shot pellets being fired from a shotgun\u201d\u00a0and was rushed to a Brookdale hospital, NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told reporters.<\/p>\n

Police busted open\u00a0a first-floor window, and flew a drone into the apartment, which showed the alleged shooter \u201clying motionless on the kitchen floor with a shotgun on the floor near him,\u201d Tisch said.<\/p>\n

Responders attempted to render aid to the gunman, who has not yet been identified, but he died at the scene.<\/p>\n

Police had been called to the address just before 6 a.m. after a 41-year-old man, Leroy Wallace, was found shot in the chest outside, according to police.<\/p>\n

The injured officer was at the scene of a homicide that occurred earlier in the morning in Brownsville when the alleged gunman showed up and opened fire. Citizen<\/p>\n

While responding to the call for Waris being shot, two other cops from the 73rd precinct were involved in a car crash. Both cops and the driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries and were taken to Brookdale hospital.<\/p>\n

Waris, a four-year veteran of the force, took his test to become a cop when he was just 19 years old and received his badge at 21, according to Police Benevolent Association President Pattrick Hendry.<\/p>\n

He was released from the hospital in a wheelchair around noon as 100 uniformed police officers saluted and applauded him.<\/p>\n
