A key commuter bridge connecting Perth’s inner southern suburbs with the CBD will remain closed until at least Wednesday evening after lighting cables fell from the structure.<\/p>\n

Boorloo Bridge, which links Victoria Park with Point Fraser in Perth’s CBD, is popular with cyclists and pedestrians and opened with much fanfare less than a year ago.<\/p>\n

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said about 70 metres of casing wrapped around the electrical lighting cables attached to the bridge broke away and fell into the Swan River around 5pm on Monday.<\/p>\n

“The fastening didn’t hold,” she told ABC Radio Perth.<\/p>\n

“The team have been out overnight checking all the fastenings and also putting in extra fastenings to make sure the casing around the cable doesn’t break away again.”<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Main Roads WA said the bridge would remain closed until a detailed inspection had been carried out.<\/p>\n

Ms Saffioti said it was set to open late Wednesday or early Thursday.<\/p>\n

She said nobody was hurt, and downplayed concerns about the safety of the bridge.<\/p>\n

“These things happen,”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

she said.<\/p>\n

“When you build structures and you build roads, rail, everything \u2014 these things happen.”<\/p>\n

“I’ve heard a lot worse \u2014 I’ve seen bridges that had to be shut for up to a year in the UK because they swayed too much when they let people on it. These things happen all around the world.<\/p>\n

“I’m really proud of this bridge \u2014 this WA-made bridge, an iconic bridge.”<\/p>\n

She said the bridge was still “under warranty” and the companies who built it would be responsible for fixing it.<\/p>\n

Boorloo Bridge was named as the WA Project of the Year in the 2025 Engineers Australia Excellence Awards and was touted as “a striking example of engineering ingenuity and collaboration, combining strength, sustainability and design innovation to create a safer and more connected Perth”.<\/p>\n

The bridge was designed to light up the Swan River at night, featuring about 17,000 LED lights installed around 64 steel cables.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On the day it opened in December 2024, a WA government press release stated the bridge would “significantly enhance connectivity, safety, and amenity for approximately 3,000 pedestrians and cyclists that currently use the significantly constrained path on the Causeway Bridge”.<\/p>\n

The bridge, and the package of works surrounding the precinct, cost $198 million.<\/p>\n
