(Rand, McNally &amp; Co.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1883: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-standard-time-adopted-c\/182442805\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Standard Time<\/a> \u2014 based on the mean solar time at the central meridian of each time zone \u2014 was formally inaugurated on a day that came to be known as the \u201cDay of Two Noons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The time zones were enacted during the <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagology.com\/transportation\/timeconvention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagology.com\/transportation\/timeconvention\/\">General Time Convention<\/a> at the Grand Pacific Hotel at LaSalle Street and Jackson Boulevard in Chicago. A plaque at the location \u2014 which is just north of the Chicago Board of Trade Building \u2014 notes its significance.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"LtoJTUpRUW\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/03\/10\/daylight-saving-time-2023-why-it-began-where-it-exists-and-how-it-saved-one-chicago-mans-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daylight saving time: Why it began, where it exists and how it saved one Chicago man\u2019s life<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The purpose \u2014 to develop a better and more uniform system of railroad scheduling. Prior to then, a Chicagoan asked to tell what time it was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/ct-daylight-saving-time-s-turbulent-start-20151029-story.html\" data-mrf-link=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/ct-daylight-saving-time-s-turbulent-start-20151029-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">could give more than one answer and still be correct<\/a>. There was local time, determined by the position of the sun at high noon at a centrally located spot in town, usually City Hall. There was also railroad time, which put Columbus, Ohio, six minutes faster than Cincinnati and 19 minutes faster than Chicago. (Jack Mulcahy\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1960:<\/strong> Some 500 people attended a dedication dinner to celebrate the <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-mccormick-place-opens-c\/185146978\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opening of McCormick Place<\/a>, which was named for late Tribune publisher Col. Robert R. McCormick who had campaigned for new convention facilities. President-elect John F. Kennedy was invited to speak at the reception, but couldn\u2019t make it.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"aOD3pSjrK1\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/11\/16\/vintage-chicago-tribune-how-mccormick-places-lakeside-center-came-to-be-on-the-lakefront\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vintage Chicago Tribune: How McCormick Place\u2019s Lakeside Center came to be on the lakefront<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Modern Living Home and Flower Show was the first convention held in the blockwide and 3-blocks-long facility and marked the first commercial use of the exposition center. It kicked off with a parade down State Street overseen by actor and parade marshal Jerry Lewis. (Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1993:<\/strong> A United Airlines Boeing 727 was moved inside the Museum of Science and Industry \u2014 piece by piece \u2014 for an exhibit. The 133-foot-long, 41-ton aircraft <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-727-travels-barge-beach\/185147882\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrived in September 1993<\/a>, by barge from Burns Harbor, Indiana, then was pulled onto 57th Street Beach and across Lake Shore Drive to the parking lot of the museum.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"Le990I94zf\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2022\/07\/21\/vintage-chicago-tribune-move-it-move-it-relocating-houses-streets-and-even-a-submarine-around-the-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vintage Chicago Tribune: Move it, move it!!! (Alyssa Pointer\/ Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2016:<\/strong> Fifteen-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2016\/11\/22\/family-students-remember-javon-wilson-grandson-of-rep-danny-davis-at-vigil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Javon Wilson<\/a>, the grandson of 10-term U.S. Rep. Danny Davis, was shot and killed inside his Englewood home as he tried to break up a fight between his siblings and two teens. Tariq M. Harris, 16, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2019\/07\/25\/woman-convicted-in-killing-of-us-rep-danny-davis-grandson-in-spat-over-gym-shoes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dijae T. Banks<\/a>, 17, were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2016\/11\/21\/2-teens-charged-with-murder-in-shooting-of-us-rep-danny-davis-grandson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">charged as adults<\/a>  and convicted of first-degree murder and home invasion in 2019. (Chicago Tribune photos)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2020:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/07\/24\/michael-mcclain-faces-sentencing-madigan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael McClain<\/a>, a close friend of House Speaker Mike Madigan; former ComEd CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/03\/13\/how-ex-comed-ceo-anne-pramaggiore-went-from-rising-corporate-star-to-defendant-in-bombshell-corruption-case\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anne Pramaggiore<\/a>; lobbyist and former ComEd executive John Hooker; and Jay Doherty, former head of the City Club of Chicago; were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2020\/11\/19\/madigan-confidant-three-others-indicted-in-comed-bribery-scheme-allegedly-aimed-at-influencing-speaker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicted<\/a> on charges of bribery conspiracy and bribery.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"nL9zZIq4tq\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/03\/13\/a-madigan-confidant-a-popular-executive-an-insider-lobbyist-a-political-consultant-who-are-the-comed-four\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A Madigan confidant. A popular executive. An insider lobbyist. A political consultant. Who are the \u2018ComEd Four\u2019?<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>McClain and Pramaggiore were each sentenced to two-year prison terms in July. Doherty was given a one-year sentence and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/09\/30\/jay-doherty-reports-prison-madigan-bribery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported to prison<\/a> in September. Hooker was given a year and a half behind bars.<\/p>\n<p>Madigan was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/02\/12\/michael-madigan-verdict-convicted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">convicted<\/a> in a separate trial of an array of schemes that included the ComEd bribery payments.
