Canadian director Raymond St-Jean\u2018s new movie, Veins, which world premiered in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/tallinn-black-nights-film-festival-2025-competition-jury-1236397516\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">main competition program<\/a> of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/tallinn-film-festival-2025-poff-preview-israel-gaza-docs-1236415011\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">29th edition<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/industrytallinn-baltic-event-2025-marge-liiske-interview-ai-1236422521\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival<\/a>\u00a0(P\u00d6FF) late Monday evening, offers options you likely haven\u2019t thought of before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIsabelle travels to a nearly abandoned small town of Saint-\u00c9tienne with her girlfriend to visit her parents and receives quite a shock when she hears from her mother that her father died a few days ago and has already been buried,\u201d reads a synopsis for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/body-horror\/\" id=\"auto-tag_body-horror_1\" data-tag=\"body-horror\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">body horror<\/a> thriller that also deals with social issues. \u201cIsabelle wants to know why she was not notified of her father\u2019s death sooner, or invited to the funeral. However, she only receives obscure explanations from both her mother and her uncle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tRomane Denis, Marie-Th\u00e9r\u00e8se Fortin, Sylvain Marcel, Anana Rydval, and Richard Fr\u00e9chette star in the movie, for which Reason8 is handling sales and which was written by Martin Girard, who attended the premiere with St-Jean.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tNaturally, during a Q&amp;A following the premiere, the director, who has worked in different genres before, was asked whether fellow Canadian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/david-cronenberg\/\" id=\"auto-tag_david-cronenberg_1\" data-tag=\"david-cronenberg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David Cronenberg<\/a> inspired Veins. \u201cCronenberg, being the so-called father of body horror and also being Canadian, of course, [means] that we know his work, and you can\u2019t avoid this question,\u201d he replied. \u201cBut honestly, we didn\u2019t think much about Cronenberg.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHe also recalled being too young to watch Cronenberg. \u201cIn the beginning, I wasn\u2019t allowed to see these films and was very curious. And I saw them later,\u201d the director shared. \u201cSo, I cannot say we were inspired by Cronenberg, but, of course, he is part of our cinematic history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-hollywoodreporter-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Veins-2-3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"576\" width=\"1024\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\u2018Veins\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSt-Jean then surprised the audience when he declared, \u201cI\u2019m not a big fan of body horror movies as a spectator, but it\u2019s fun to do, and it served the purpose of the movie well. And visually, for the director, it is a dream to do these films.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHe explained that watching body horror tends to make audiences, including him, uncomfortable. \u201cThat\u2019s the nature of the genre,\u201d St-Jean said. \u201cSo when I say I\u2019m not a big fan, it\u2019s because I feel the same emotion. \u2026 But it\u2019s very efficient, as you see. I think only in cinema can you create that feeling. I don\u2019t know if literature can give you that feeling of realism. It\u2019s very troubling, and I think that\u2019s the function of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tContinued St-Jean: \u201cOf course, we made the film in the context of Titane and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/the-substance\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-substance_1\" data-tag=\"the-substance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Substance<\/a>. And there are many of these films now, and we try to create drama and create something that seems real. But it\u2019s also a poetic movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe director also highlighted that the body horror genre is \u201cwell-suited to also explore social issues,\u201d explaining: A lot of things that we talk about in the film are things that are [being discussed] in Quebec and Canada: all these questions of assisted dying, the shutdown of [whole] industries in [various] regions, and all the problems that this causes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSt-Jean also shared that Veins is the first body horror movie shot in Quebec, concluding: \u201cSo we\u2019re breaking ground at home.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"What becomes of our loved ones after death?
