However, it has also been used in recent years to spring a political ally or friend from prison or prevent investigations into family members, like when then-President Joe Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/biden-pardons-family-trump-white-hous-caee326c4723a4ba6d972f7daf750a0b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pardoned members of his family<\/a>. President Donald Trump, over his two terms, has pardoned many political figures in the New York political world, with former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani among the latest batch. Here are some of the marquee names that Trump has either pardoned or commuted their sentence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rudy Giuliani<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The former New York City mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-pardons-dozens-overturn-2020-election-results-false-electors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">was pardoned<\/a> on Nov. 7 for his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. He was disbarred in New York, in part, for making <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/07\/02\/rudy-giuliani-disbarred-in-new-york-00166232\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">false statements in federal court<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>George Santos<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The serial fabulist is free (and potentially <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MrSantosNY\/status\/1986066596004069546\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">leaving New York?<\/a>) His <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/10\/20\/nx-s1-5579580\/trump-commuted-the-prison-sentence-of-george-santos-a-look-at-how-it-happened\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">seven-year sentence<\/a> for wire fraud and identity theft was commuted by the president last month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael Grimm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Former Rep. Michael Grimm was pardoned in May for the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-pardon-michael-grimm-new-york-fraud-30dd91417b29015aa0f78503efefc81d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">tax fraud charges<\/a> that led to his resignation from Congress. Grimm is now <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/michael-grimm-congress-polo-paralyzed-bf4dd7cde28d82d55ecacc8d005c821b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">paralyzed<\/a> from the chest down after falling off a horse last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chris Collins<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Former Rep. Chris Collins is on the comeback after being pardoned in 2020 for <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/nys\/central-ny\/news\/2020\/12\/23\/president-trump-grants-full-pardon-to-former-rep--chris-collins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">insider trading charges<\/a>. He moved to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/style\/power\/2024\/01\/18\/chris-collins-profile-trump-pardon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">mansion in Florida<\/a>, leaving Western New York behind, and is planning to <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/nys\/buffalo\/politics\/2025\/08\/11\/former-disgraced-rep--chris-collins-to-run-for-congress-in-florida\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">run for Congress<\/a> next year \u2013 plus he has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/My-Remarkable-Life\/Chris-Collins\/9798895653272\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">new book<\/a> coming out next month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Roger Stone<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2019\/jan\/25\/roger-stone-a-master-of-the-political-dirty-trick\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Political trickster<\/a> Roger Stone was connected to Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and sentenced to 40 months in federal prison. He had his sentence <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/trump-says-hes-looking-at-pardoning-roger-stone-ahead-of-prison-term\/2020\/07\/10\/d1a1e5ea-c2b7-11ea-b4f6-cb39cd8940fb_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">commuted<\/a> and was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/12\/23\/949820820\/trump-pardons-roger-stone-paul-manafort-and-charles-kushner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pardoned<\/a>, both in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Steve Bannon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A man of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/2017\/09\/why-steve-bannon-wears-so-many-shirts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">many shirts<\/a>, Steve Bannon was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/01\/19\/politics\/steve-bannon-pardoned-by-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pardoned<\/a> as one of the final acts of Trump\u2019s first term. Bannon had been accused of defrauding border wall investors, and recently said he thought he\u2019d be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/steve-bannon-predicts-prison-if-republicans-lose-midterms-2028-11009422\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">going back to prison<\/a> if Democrats win in 2026 and 2028.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Charles Kushner<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The father of Trump\u2019s former senior adviser Jared Kushner, Charles Kushner served <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/03\/05\/nyregion\/democratic-donor-receives-twoyear-prison-sentence.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">two years in prison<\/a> two decades ago for tax evasion and witness tampering. He was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/12\/23\/949820820\/trump-pardons-roger-stone-paul-manafort-and-charles-kushner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pardoned<\/a> in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Douglas Jemal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Real estate developer Douglas Jemal, who has prominent ties to Western New York, received a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wkbw.com\/news\/local-news\/developer-douglas-jemal-on-list-of-nearly-150-people-to-receive-last-hour-presidential-pardons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">last-minute pardon<\/a> before Trump\u2019s first term ended in 2021 for a 2006 fraud conviction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Albert Pirro<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The ex-husband of Jeanine Pirro, the former Westchester district attorney and current U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, Albert Pirro was <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/trump-issues-minute-pardon-husband-fox-news-jeanine\/story?id=75376007\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pardoned in 2021<\/a> for 34 counts of conspiracy and tax evasion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bernard Kerik<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bernard Kerik, the former New York City Police Department commissioner who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/29\/nyregion\/bernard-kerik-dead.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">died in May<\/a>, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/trump-pardons-bernard-kerik-why-former-n-y-police-commissioner-n1138236\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pardoned in 2020<\/a> following a four-year sentence for tax fraud in 2010.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Susan B. Anthony<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Suffragette Susan B. Anthony was posthumously pardoned by Trump in 2020, which was rejected by the National Susan B. Anthony Museum and House in Rochester. She was arrested in 1872 for voting, and the museum\u2019s president and CEO said she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/08\/18\/politics\/donald-trump-pardon-susan-b-anthony\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wouldn\u2019t have wanted a pardon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dinesh D\u2019Souza<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Writer Dinesh D\u2019Souza pleaded guilty to making illegal campaign contributions to Wendy Long\u2019s 2012 U.S. Senate campaign in New York. He was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/05\/31\/us\/politics\/dinesh-dsouza-facts-history.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pardoned by Trump in 2018<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ken Kurson<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Former New York Observer editor Ken Kurson was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/01\/20\/us\/politics\/trump-pardons.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pardoned in 2021<\/a> after he was accused of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/10\/23\/nyregion\/ken-kurson-arrest-cyberstalking.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cyberstalking<\/a>, including installing spyware on his<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/trump-family-friend-ken-kurson-pardoned-trump-pleads\/story?id=82931684\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> ex-wife\u2019s computer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael McMahon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last month, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/07\/politics\/michael-mcmahon-trump-pardon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pardoned<\/a> Michael McMahon, a former New York City Police Department officer, who was sentenced to 18 months in prison for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/private-investigator-sentenced-prison-interstate-stalking-and-harassment-chinese-nationals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">stalking a family on behalf of the Chinese government<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"In an ideal world, the power of the presidential pardon can override grave miscarriages of justice.
