{"id":388811,"date":"2025-11-19T01:15:19","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T01:15:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/388811\/"},"modified":"2025-11-19T01:15:19","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T01:15:19","slug":"trustees-of-maimonides-hospital-sue-to-block-nyc-takeover","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/388811\/","title":{"rendered":"Trustees of Maimonides hospital sue to block NYC takeover"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Trustees of the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/09\/05\/nycs-maimonides-lost-145m-in-2021-pushing-hospital-to-near-collapse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">financiallys truggling <\/a>Maimonides Hospital, located in heavily orthodox Jewish south Brooklyn, filed a lawsuit early this week to stop a government takeover of the 80-year-old medical facility.<\/p>\n<p>Maimonides\u2019 leadership plans to merge with the city\u2019s public hospital system \u2014 Health + Hospitals \u2014 converting the private, independent hospital into a city-run facility overseen by a board and president\/CEO appointed by the mayor.<\/p>\n<p>A part of the merger, Maimonides would receive a desperately needed $2.2 billion over five years through a state grant, according to a spokesperson for the cash-strapped hospital. <\/p>\n<p>Trustees for Maimonides Hospital filed a lawsuit to stop the government from taking over the medical facility. Paul Martinka<\/p>\n<p>But trustees of the medical center and nearby Borough Park residents, particularly Jewish locals, fear the level of care at a public Maimonides \u2014 named after 12th-century Rabbi Moshe Ben Maimon, an advocate for medical training \u2014 would drastically decline.<\/p>\n<p>Maimonides trustees Aaron Twerski, Peter Rebenwurzel, George Weinberger, Chaim Fisher, Yehoshua Leib Leib Fruchthandler, Marty Waisbrod and David Spira argued in the suit filed Sunday that the sale to Health+Hospitals would violate the board\u2019s fiduciary duty to act in the best interests of Maimonides.<\/p>\n<p>Their complaint also claimed H+H\u2019s Brooklyn-based hospitals are consistently ranked among the<br \/>lowest in New York State, raising profound concerns about the quality of care that could result<br \/>from converting Maimonides into a public hospital.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the lawsuit also claimed other proposals were not seriously considered, including those from Touro College and Westchester Medical Center.<\/p>\n<p>A Brooklyn lawmaker who defended the hospital when <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/08\/13\/maimonides-medical-center-racks-up-patient-complaints\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its patient care <\/a>came under attack three years ago said he was furious and walked out of a meeting when Maimonides executives pushed the city takeover of the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was born at Maimonides,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/08\/21\/group-out-to-destroy-nycs-maimonides-hospital-state-senator-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Councilman Simcha Felder<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The financially struggling hospital plans to merge with Health + Hospitals. Instagram \/ wearetouro<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat they\u2019re doing is outrageous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are destroying a hospital that has existed for many years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For now, the city takeover of the private hospital is on hold after Brooklyn state Supreme Court Judge Aaron Maslow issued a temporary restraining order blocking any sale pending a hearing in January.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are grateful that the Court has paused this rushed attempt to sell Maimonides and convert it into a public hospital,\u201d the plaintiffs said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe look forward to a thoughtful, transparent, and well-supported process that truly considers what is best for Maimonides and the patients who rely on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maimonides is considered a safety net hospital, meaning it provides medical care regardless of patients\u2019 ability to pay. It\u2019s heavily reliant on Medicaid and state subsidies to serve a large indigent caseload to stay afloat.<\/p>\n<p>If the merger passes, Maimonides will receive $2.2 billion over five years through a state grant. Paul Martinka<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the hospital\u2019s financial situation is dire as it has been hemorrhaging hundreds of millions of dollars a year.<\/p>\n<p>Other similar, mid-sized, independent hospitals that haven\u2019t closed linked up with larger private hospital systems, such as Presbyterian or NYU Langone, to remain viable.<\/p>\n<p>The city\u2019s former Catholic hospitals, such as<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2010\/04\/30\/st-vincents-closes-for-good\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> St. Vincent\u2019s in <\/a>Manhattan, shuttered years ago.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2013\/11\/07\/long-island-city-hospital-not-accepting-any-new-patients\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Long Island College Hospital <\/a>in Brownstone Brooklyn closed a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p>Maimonides management on Tuesday defended its plan to join Health + Hospitals to put the medical facility on sounder financial footing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor more than a decade, our board has directed us to explore partnerships with other health systems to expand our capacity to deliver high-quality care, meet the growing needs of our communities and strengthen our financial position, which is hampered by our status as a safety net hospital,\u201d said Maimonides spokesman Sam Miller.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStart your day with all you need to know\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMorning Report delivers the latest news, videos, photos and more.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the last several months, Maimonides has engaged in discussions with the leadership of New York City Health + Hospitals to join their system.
